A woman lost her leg after becoming trapped in a moving walkway at an airport on Thursday, June 29.
The identity of the 57-year-old passenger remains undisclosed. She was about to board a flight from Terminal Two at Don Mueang Airport, in Bangkok, Thailand, when she stumbled over her suitcase, which resulted in her leg getting ensnared in the walkway mechanism.
Despite the valiant efforts of the airport’s medical team, they were unable to free her from the perilous predicament. They were left with no choice but to amputate her left leg above the knee.
A photograph taken immediately after the incident shows the woman leaning against a first responder, her missing limb discreetly concealed by a pair of blue jeans.
Initially, the woman was taken to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, where she was informed that her leg was beyond reattachment. However, she subsequently sought a second opinion at Bumrungrad International Hospital. Doctors there expressed hope that the mangled limb could be successfully reattached, according to The Straits Times.
The airport revealed that the moving walkway involved in the incident was manufactured by Hitachi, a Japanese company, in 1996. While suitcase wheels were found beneath the walkway, their exact role in this accident remains uncertain.
