Five Wounded in Casino Mass Stabbing

Five restaurant employees were wounded in a stabbing inside a Thunder Valley Casino kitchen near Lincoln, Calif., on August 19, 2026 — none of them critically, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Sorrow for the victims was expressed by the relatives of Joseph Naugle, a 23-year-old restaurant worker at the Dos Coyotes Border Cafe who is accused of stabbing five of his co-workers; an earlier account had listed his age as 22. Severe physical and mental health problems, the family said, have troubled him for years.

The family’s statement went to KCRA 3 on August 23. In it, relatives extended their sympathies to the Thunder Valley employees and their loved ones and said they were praying continuously for their recovery and peace of mind.

“While we cannot speak on the details of the active legal case, we hope there will be an understanding of the complex medical realities involved,” the family said.

Investigators have not made a motive public. What led up to the attack was not something officials could detail immediately, and the investigation remains open, the sheriff’s office said.

Violence in the Restaurant Kitchen

The sheriff’s office, announcing the incident in a Facebook post, put the time of the stabbing at about 7 p.m. Every one of the five victims was attacked in the kitchen area of the restaurant, a Thunder Valley Casino spokesperson said that night. Everyone drawn into the violence was an employee there, and no casino guests were involved.

A drive to an area hospital was needed for one of the wounded, whose injuries were not considered life-threatening. Thunder Valley emergency personnel and Cal Fire crews treated the other four, whose injuries also were not life-threatening. Photographs shared with KCRA 3 showed paramedics tending to workers on the casino floor, and the station’s LiveCopter 3 filmed the investigation from the air.

By then, containment of the scene had already happened. A suspect was taken into custody by deputies within minutes of their arrival at the casino, the sheriff’s office said. The same striking image was recorded by both a KCRA 3 news crew and a CBS News Sacramento camera — a handcuffed man, still in his kitchen apron, being walked to the back of a patrol vehicle.

All Involved Worked at Dos Coyotes

The sheriff’s office said it appeared Naugle knew all the people who were stabbed. The casino spokesperson had said on the night of the attack that Dos Coyotes employed Naugle and all five victims. None of the five has been publicly identified.

No other suspects were being sought, officials said, and neither the public nor anyone inside the casino faced an active threat. Thunder Valley was not evacuated. Only the restaurant shut its doors, while the rest of the property kept running for the evening — a reminder of how tightly the violence stayed inside one back-of-house workspace.

Thunder Valley Casino Resort sits in unincorporated Placer County about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, owned and operated by the United Auburn Indian Community, and its gaming floor and restaurants draw crowds nightly. Among the casino’s dining options is one called Dos Coyotes Border Cafe.

Attempted Murder Charges and Court Dates

The sheriff’s office identified him as Joseph Benedict John Naugle and booked him on two counts of attempted murder, saying it expected more charges to follow. ABC10 has reported five charges in all, covering attempted murder and assault.

His first court appearance came on Friday, August 21, but the arraignment was continued and no plea was entered that day. Naugle is ineligible for bail, and the Placer County District Attorney’s Office said five separate criminal protective orders were filed against him in connection with that first court appearance.

At a hearing in Placer County Superior Court on August 26, Naugle, 23, pleaded not guilty to felony attempted murder. According to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, the defense asked the court to appoint a doctor; what the examination is meant to establish has not been spelled out in any account of the hearing. An advisory hearing is set for September 2.

Motive has hung over the case since the first patrol cars pulled up to the casino, and that question is still unanswered. Neither the sheriff’s office nor prosecutors have explained the attack. Naugle’s medical history was raised in the family’s statement, but the allegations themselves went unaddressed there.

By the narrowest of measures, the five wounded workers fared better than they might have. All five survived, four were patched up on site, and none faced life-threatening injuries — an outcome that owed much to how quickly casino medics, Cal Fire crews and deputies reached the kitchen.
