FOX Host Humiliates Dr. Oz on Live TV

President Donald Trump’s Medicare and Medicaid chief went on Fox News to argue that Americans deserve to know what their health care costs before they pay for it. Instead, he got a live-television lesson on the price of butter.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, appeared on Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s program the evening federal officials announced sweeping changes to requirements designed to make medical costs clearer for everyday patients. The former television star came armed with props: a stick of butter and a bag of peanuts. Oz leads an agency inside a health team Trump began assembling before his inauguration, which included Stanford health policy professor Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, nominated as director of the National Institutes of Health in November 2024.

Oz Brings Props to Fox News

“We should know what things cost, OK? We wanna know what we’re paying. What the h–k is going on, and how can you guys tackle this?” Ingraham asked.

“Well, at healthcare, we write the prices in invisible ink. So, you have no idea what things are gonna cost. I brought you something as an example. We went grocery shopping — stick of butter, bag of peanuts. Butter in America, it’s about a buck for a stick like this. If I charge you 10 dollars—” Oz told Ingraham.

The host cut him off before he could finish the comparison. “Where are you shopping? It’s not a buck. It’s like four,” Ingraham said.

“Well, I just bought this, so it’s close to that,” Oz replied with a laugh. “Maybe I got it—maybe it’s going bad.”

“A Mamdani store you bought it at,” Ingraham scoffed — a jab at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has pushed plans for five city-owned grocery stores selling staples at a 30 percent discount.

Oz took the opening and steered back to his pitch. “Exactly. So, you buy the stick of butter, and you buy it for the right price. In healthcare, we’re not doing this. This stick of butter could cost anything. You have no idea until after you’ve already made the purchase,” he said.

A Stick of Butter, Priced

The host’s correction proved generous. The brand of butter displayed on the set is sold at Trader Joe’s, where the retail listing is $4.99 — roughly five times the figure the administrator offered viewers as a nationwide benchmark.

Affordability Dominates the Midterm Fight

The stumble landed at a moment when the cost of ordinary household goods has become the central argument of the election season. On Sept. 30, 2026, a Republican bill aimed at voter anxiety over data centers and their effect on monthly energy bills failed to advance in the Senate, 57-43, short of the 60 votes needed. The same measure had cleared the House 417-3.

Its sponsor, Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, faces a difficult reelection fight against former Sen. Sherrod Brown, his Democratic challenger. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called the bill a fraud and argued its standard should be mandatory rather than optional; Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., has offered a competing proposal. About 6 in 10 Americans support limiting the number of new data centers built. Both chambers are expected to stay out of session for all of October ahead of the midterms.

The Numbers Behind the Grocery Bill

Consumer Price Index data undercuts the suggestion that staples are cheap. Grocery costs have climbed 3.4 percent on average since January 2025. Egg prices have fallen 31.1 percent following earlier spikes driven by bird flu, but coffee has surged 21.8 percent and beef products have jumped 16.5 percent.

Trump has spent months falsely claiming the country is in the middle of a sweeping deflation, telling reporters that “the prices for groceries have come way down from Biden” and insisting that everything except oil is getting cheaper.

Oz’s underlying point — that patients routinely learn the cost of care only after the bill arrives — is the core of the transparency push the administration is selling. The trouble, as Ingraham demonstrated in a few seconds of airtime, is that the analogy required knowing what a stick of butter costs.
