A coordinated militant assault on a police post in northwest Pakistan killed 11 officers and left more than 20 wounded, officials confirmed Thursday morning, July 30, 2026. While a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, the TTP operates as a distinct entity and has been linked to much of the militant violence that has surged in Pakistan in recent years. The group has demonstrated an increasing capacity to strike fortified targets including military checkpoints and police facilities.
Previous attacks in the province have followed similar patterns. In May, a suicide bombing at a Bannu district security post killed 14 people in a strike that was later claimed by a splinter faction. Both Bannu and Hangu sit within the frontier belt, a region where insurgent organizations have long operated.
Provincial Security Under Mounting Pressure
Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed visited Hangu to meet with wounded officers, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police said, a trip that underscored official concern over the assault and the escalating burden on provincial forces.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has endured multiple forms of violence in recent years. In November 2024, gunmen attacked passenger vehicle convoys in the Kurram tribal district, shooting and killing at least 38 people in an ambush that included a woman and child among the dead, tied to a protracted sectarian land feud. A separate suicide bombing in a Peshawar mosque claimed 84 lives, marking one of the deadliest strikes the city has witnessed.
These varied incidents highlight the complex security landscape confronting authorities, with threats ranging from sectarian militants to border-based insurgent networks.
Pakistan has consistently accused Afghanistan’s Taliban government, which reclaimed power in 2021, of sheltering TTP fighters—a charge Kabul rejects. The dispute has strained bilateral relations, with Islamabad contending that militants launch cross-border raids from Afghan territory before withdrawing to safe havens beyond Pakistani reach.
Officials had not released additional information about the attackers’ identities or potential motives by early Thursday, and no arrests were announced. The focus in Hangu remained on treating the wounded and reinforcing security in a district once more at the center of an enduring conflict.
