In conversations with advisers following Graham’s passing, Trump wondered aloud whether the senator’s demanding travel regimen might have contributed to his sudden collapse. Trump’s Final Conversation With Graham
Graham contacted Trump by phone around 7 p.m. following his return from Ukraine, discussing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act. Trump later remembered the senator sounding fatigued yet otherwise unremarkable given the long journey abroad. The two agreed to reconnect in the near future.
That exchange could have been the senator’s final phone conversation, Trump told NBC “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker on July 12. Emergency responders were summoned to Graham’s Capitol Hill home Saturday night after he went into cardiac arrest. Graham had turned 71 two days prior and was scheduled to appear on “Meet the Press” Sunday morning.
Speaking emotionally about the lawmaker’s death, Trump described Graham as “like family” and called the development “a tough loss.”
Visible Signs and Public Statements
Though Trump routinely maintains he possesses the cognitive sharpness and physical endurance his position requires, physical changes have become noticeable during his second term.
