Kamala Harris’ New Mansion Has Nation Completely Divided

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has settled into an $8.15 million oceanfront estate in Point Dume, an exclusive enclave along the Malibu coastline — and the demographics of her new neighborhood are drawing scrutiny given her decades-long record of championing racial equity in housing.

The 4,000-square-foot property, acquired by Harris and her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, comes loaded with luxury amenities: sweeping ocean views, multiple wine fridges, private golf greens and parking for up to five vehicles. What it lacks, according to census data, is racial diversity.

A Neighborhood That Is 94% White

Point Dume is located in Census tract 8004.08, where 2019 data from the American Community Survey showed the population was approximately 94% White and just 0.2% Black. That demographic reality stands in contrast to the communities Harris championed throughout her public career — from Oakland, California, to Berkeley, California, to Washington, D.C. — and to the values she articulated on the campaign trail and in office.

Harris has spoken over the years about the formative experience of attending Howard University, the historically Black institution in Washington, D.C., and what it meant to be surrounded by a large Black community. She said in 2019 that attending a school like Howard — in a city long celebrated as a hub of Black American life — helped her understand “that there is a whole world of people who are like you.”

She also reflected on growing up in predominantly White social circles, noting that her choice to attend Howard was driven less by a desire for diversity than by the sheer number of Black peers she would encounter there. “It was more, for me, about the numerosity than it was the diversity,” Harris told the Washington Post in 2019. “Going to Howard, there were so many (Black people)! And they’re all in your age group, in your phase of life.”

A Career Built on Housing Equity

Harris’ professional record on housing issues is extensive. In 2012, while serving as California’s attorney general, she joined a Supreme Court brief asserting that the Fair Housing Act can be enforced against policies that produce a “disparate impact” across racial groups — even when those policies are written in racially neutral language. During her 2020 presidential campaign, she proposed $100 billion in assistance for families residing in historically redlined communities. As vice president, she promoted efforts within the Biden administration to address racial bias in home appraisals.

That record makes the choice of Point Dume notable. Two non-White surfers assessed the area in a 2025 review, noting that the relaxed surfing culture obscures obstacles that prevent most BIPOC individuals from accessing the community.

The community has drawn criticism for what some describe as efforts to restrict beach access.

Questions About Authenticity

Questions about the authenticity of Harris’ connection to the communities she has championed are not new. During her 2020 presidential campaign, her background drew scrutiny from commentators across the political spectrum who debated how to categorize her identity and experiences.

The Point Dume purchase has reignited that conversation. For supporters, it is a private matter — a couple purchasing a home in a place they chose. For detractors, it represents a disconnect between progressive rhetoric and personal decisions.
