David Furnish offered a comforting update on husband Elton John’s condition this week, telling Variety the music icon is “battling on” despite persistent vision issues that have affected the 78-year-old over the last year.
Speaking before the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026, Furnish described a peaceful home life for the EGOT winner, who stepped away from touring to focus on family.
Furnish said John is doing well, still fighting, and keeping active and attentive at home with their sons — the reason he gave up touring.
Furnish and John are parents to two sons, Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13. Since John ended his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in July 2023, the family has largely stayed out of the spotlight, trading packed stadiums for quieter life near Windsor Castle.
The “Rocket Man” has been open about his mounting health challenges in recent years. In July 2024 he lost sight in his right eye after a severe infection while vacationing in the south of France. During a Good Morning America appearance that November, he disclosed the scope of his condition: four months without sight in his right eye and reduced vision in his left.
The eyesight loss is one more in a string of medical issues for the veteran performer. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” he humorously ran through his operations, saying he’s had surgeries on his knees, right hip, prostate, appendix, and tonsils.
“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” John quipped. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”
In 2021, a painful fall forced John to postpone several dates on his farewell tour. He later had hip surgery and underwent intensive physiotherapy to recover mobility and return to performing.
Despite these setbacks, John stays actively involved in his charitable work. The annual Academy Awards viewing party, now in its 34th year, raises funds for HIV/AIDS research and advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised more than £300 million since 1992.
This year’s event will be co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka. Grammy winner Lola Young will perform, and the guest list includes stars such as Dua Lipa, Donatella Versace, Keke Palmer, Quinta Brunson, Jon Batiste, Nikki Glaser, Adam Lambert, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, and Sharon Stone.
Furnish expressed optimism about this year’s fundraising goals, aiming to raise over $9 million for the foundation. He noted last year was especially difficult after the devastating Los Angeles fires in January 2025, which killed at least 31 people and destroyed more than 18,000 structures across Pacific Palisades and Altadena, creating competing needs for aid in Southern California.
Furnish added that ticket sales are strong this year, and the event will feature a special artwork by Irish painter Jack Coulter. Coulter painted live while John played “Tiny Dancer” on piano — a unique collaboration that will be auctioned during the evening.
John and Furnish appeared together at Donatella Versace’s New Year’s Eve party in 2025 with Zachary and Elijah. The uncommon public outing highlighted the family’s effort to remain close despite John’s ongoing health issues.
Although John has stepped back from touring, Furnish’s remarks suggest the singer has found contentment in this chapter. He is prioritizing family time while continuing to support causes that define his legacy beyond music. For fans worried about his well-being, Furnish’s update offers reassurance: John is in good spirits, surrounded by love, and staying engaged despite physical limitations.
