The Buffalo, New York community was jolted by the distressing discovery of 12-year-old Jaylen Griffin’s body in a South Buffalo home’s attic on April 12, 2024, after an agonizing four-year period of uncertainty.
Griffin was last seen on August 4, 2020 near his Warren Avenue home, en route to a nearby corner store, a journey he never completed. The young boy’s remains were found by a maintenance worker conducting routine checks in an apartment building. A medical examination confirmed Griffin’s identity through dental records, verifying the remains’ prolonged presence in the attic, located 4.5 miles from the child’s residence. The local police confirmed the grim details.
The revelation has impacted Buffalo, especially considering the house at 107 Sheffield Avenue’s reputation for regular police visits due to various issues. Despite the house’s frequent new occupants and constant police presence, neighbors expressed their surprise and grief, stating they had not observed any signs indicating the house’s attic harbored such a grim secret.
Buffalo Police Department, led by Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, officially confirmed the identification and said, “We are deeply saddened by this discovery and are committed to bringing justice to Jaylen and his family.”
Regrettably, Joanne Ponzo, 48, Griffin’s mother, died in September, unaware of her son’s fate. She had urged friends and family to persist in their search efforts until her last days. The community also mourns the loss of Griffin’s 18-year-old brother, Jawaan, who was fatally shot just three months after Jaylen’s disappearance, adding to the family’s tragic narrative.
Pastor Tim Newkirk, a key figure in the Griffin family’s search efforts, voiced his sorrow and resolve at a local vigil: “We’ve found Jaylen, but now we need to find out what happened to him. This is not just a case of a missing boy; it’s a question of justice for a life cut tragically short.”
With the help of Crime Stoppers, the Buffalo police are stepping up their investigation. Crime Stoppers is offering a $7,500 reward for information that aids in solving this case. The community continues to rally, marking the heartbreaking discovery with memorials and vigils while remembering Jaylen’s abruptly ended life.
