Beloved Singer Dies Suddenly at 70

Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated singer whose velvet baritone carried “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)” and “You Are My Lady” into fixtures of 1980s radio, died Monday night, Oct. 5, 2026.

A statement his family posted to the singer’s official Instagram account on Tuesday, Oct. 6, announced the death. The family gave no cause of death.

Accounts of his age differ. HuffPost, NBC News and ABC7 New York reported that Jackson was 70 and, as the family statement said, died three days after his 70th birthday. An Associated Press account published Oct. 8 said he was 69 and died three days after his 69th birthday.

Family Remembers a Generous Man

“Freddie was more than a legendary voice,” the family said in the statement.

Kindness and generosity defined him, his relatives said, recalling a man devoted to his music, his friends, his family and the fans who followed him. The songs he recorded over decades, the family said, became the soundtrack to listeners’ love stories, celebrations and most treasured memories. The family said details about arrangements and ways to honor his legacy will be shared in the coming days.

From Harlem Gospel to Stardom

Frederick Anthony Jackson grew up in Harlem, where he was born, and White Rock Baptist Church gave him his first platform as a young gospel singer. The clubs of New York taught him the rest of the trade; he traveled out West with the funk band Mystic Merlin in the late ’70s, then returned home.

Stardom came almost immediately with his 1985 debut album, “Rock Me Tonight.” Its title track held No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart for six weeks, the album itself topped the R&B albums chart, and platinum certification followed from the Recording Industry Association of America.

His signature song turned out to be “You Are My Lady,” another track from the debut. The single reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the highest pop placement of his career — and found permanent rotation at weddings and engagements.

Voters handed Jackson the only two Grammy nominations he would ever receive in 1986, for best new artist and best male R&B vocal performance for “You Are My Lady.”

His 1987 follow-up album, “Just Like the First Time,” also went platinum and sent three singles to No. 1 on the R&B charts: “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody” and “Jam Tonight.” A fourth single, “I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love,” stopped at No. 2. His duet with singer Melba Moore, “A Little Bit More,” also topped the chart.

In 1989, Jackson joined singer Irene Cara on “Love Survives,” a duet produced by Michael Lloyd for the “All Dogs Go to Heaven” soundtrack. He released more than a dozen albums in all, among them “Time for Love” in 1992. Urban radio kept him in heavy rotation through the ’80s and early ’90s, and the Billboard charts kept him among their mainstays.

A Kidney Disease Diagnosis

Jackson told followers in September 2024 that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease. “This journey has had its challenges but I’ve decided to face it with openness and resilience,” he said in a video posted to his social media accounts. Going public, he added, was his way of doing some good with the news.

He also announced a partnership with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness of the illness. Chronic kidney disease affects more than one in seven American adults, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, and as many as nine in 10 of them do not know they have it. Damage to the kidneys’ ability to filter blood allows excess waste and fluid to build up, leading to other problems, such as heart disease.

Still on Stage This Year

Jackson headlined an 80s Night concert in Fort Worth, Texas, in April, and he performed at a Philadelphia winery in June.

Accounts of his last new music also differ. ABC7 New York reported that Jackson “continued to release new music until 2019.” An earlier account said his final album, “My First Love,” came in 2023, and that his sets paired that material with the hits audiences had carried for 40 years.
