Former US Swimming Champion’s Death Under Investigation by Virgin Islands Police

A former American athlete’s death initiated an investigation in the Virgin Islands.

Jamie Cail, 42, was discovered unresponsive at her home by her boyfriend earlier this year and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to a news release from the US Virgin Islands Police Department.

Cail, a former swimming champion who won several titles in major tournaments in the 1990s and 2000s, moved to the Virgin Islands and worked at a cafe in St. John, according to her relatives.

Cail grew up in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Cail’s boyfriend arrived at their home around midnight and discovered the woman lifeless on the floor, according to authorities. He had returned home from a neighboring tavern to check on his girlfriend, according to the press release.

The boyfriend claims he and a friend carried the 42-year-old woman to a nearby car and rushed her to the hospital.

Cail was immediately given CPR by Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic staff, but she was unable to be revived and was declared dead.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the police department is now looking into her death.

Cail’s interest in swimming began as a child. In 1998 and 1999, she competed in freestyle and butterfly events. She then went on to compete for the United States in the FINA Swimming World Cup and the Pan Pacific Championships.

She won a gold medal at the Pan Pacific Championships and a silver medal at the FINA Swimming World Cup, according to FINA, now known as World Aquatics.

Cail was on the University of Maine’s women’s swim team from 2000 to 2001 before she graduated in 2003.

Virgin Island authorities confirmed in March that the autopsy results were in but they have not been revealed due to an ongoing criminal investigation.

Despite authorities being quiet, right before the spring break tourism season started, sources in St. John identified Cail’s boyfriend as Kamal Thomas, 34, a/k/a “Six Pack.” He has a criminal record and previously was convicted of murder.

He was in prison in Florida for his role in a 2007 gang fatal stabbing of a Pennsylvania man,  21-year-old Jamie Cockayne, at a bar in St. John.

Police have not confirmed that Thomas was the man who contacted them.
