An Oklahoma police officer is still miraculously alive and fighting for his life after he was critically wounded in a freak accident, and authorities said he died three times.
Officer Jeremy McCain was leaving the Oklahoma Christian School in his patrol car on Friday, March 10, when he smashed into a security gate. According to Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III, the metal bars of the gate entered the vehicle upon impact and pinned the officer inside the car.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the Sheriff said that the patrol car was only traveling at 10 mph as the officer tried to pull out of the school’s driveway at around 7 pm on Friday.
The sheriff’s office said on Facebook that the single dad of one suffered serious injuries in the accident.
According to the Sheriff, Officer McCain died three times on Friday night. The first time was at the crash scene, the second at the hospital’s emergency room while doctors massaged his heart, and the third and final time was during surgery.
Sheriff Johnson said it was a miracle that McCain was still alive, adding that he would celebrate his 11th year on the force in June.
Sheriff Johnson told reporters that McCain was driving in the dark when he smashed into the metal gate.
Witnesses immediately called 911 and began helping the trapped officer. According to McCain’s family, two of the witnesses were medical personnel, and they gave the officer a fighting chance due to their quick response.
Sheriff Johnson praised bystanders, saying Officer McCain was alive because of their actions.
McCain’s condition was stable but critical on Monday, and CT scans established that he had not suffered any severe brain damage, but suffered a broken neck.
A GoFundMe campaign to support the officer has raised over $66,000.
