Memphis professional wrestling has lost one of its most influential figures: “Superstar” Bill Dundee is dead at 82. The announcement came from his son, the wrestler Jamie Dundee, who said his father died at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026. No cause of death has been disclosed. A funeral is set for Thursday, September 17, at Love & Truth Church in Jackson, Tenn., with visitation from 10 a.m. to noon and the service at noon.
Jamie Dundee posted the announcement on Facebook and signed off as “Bill’s Boy.” Memphis Wrestling said it had received confirmation from the family at around 3:20 a.m., and Conrad Thompson said Dundee died sometime Sunday morning.
A Tribute That Aired the Day Before
Memphis Wrestling handed a full segment of one of its episodes to Dundee’s career. It had been taped on August 23, when Dundee made what turned out to be his final appearance at the promotion’s WrestleCenter; wrestlers on the current roster filed out of the locker room and lined up to shake his hand. The segment aired on WMC on Saturday, September 5 — one day before he died. What had been built as a celebration turned into the last look fans got at him on Memphis Wrestling television.
Memphis Wrestling owner and announcer Dustin Starr set up the moment by recalling the years Dundee spent main eventing against longtime rival Jerry “The King” Lawler for the Southern Heavyweight Championship. Dundee signed a title belt and did a meet-and-greet. “He had a five-minute standing ovation,” Starr said. The broadcast said his influence reached generations of talent across Memphis Wrestling, the USWA, Power Pro Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling.
On August 21, just over two weeks before his death, Dundee helped raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital despite his declining health, appearing at a Tupelo, Miss., show alongside Lawler, “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart, King Cobra and Shane Russell. “‘Superstar’ helped define an era of Memphis Wrestling that will never be duplicated,” Memphis Wrestling officials said.
The Lawler Rivalry That Built a Territory
Lawler is inseparable from the Dundee story. For decades the two flipped between bitter enemies and successful partners, and the Mid-South Coliseum was where they drew their headline crowds, across a string of programs that included several Loser Leaves Town stipulations. Their 1977 rivalry ran on the kind of over-the-top stakes that became a hallmark of the territory: one match put Lawler’s hair against the hair of Dundee’s wife, Beverly, and when Dundee lost, her head was shaved in the ring. Another sent Dundee home with Lawler’s prized Cadillac.
The same two men also won together, taking the AWA World Tag Team Championship twice in 1987. On his own, Dundee is widely credited with nine reigns as AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion, though specialist databases tally as many as 13 depending on where they draw the title’s lineage; he collected numerous tag team titles over his years in Tennessee, all while billed at roughly 5-foot-7 — undersized on paper, and a perennial main eventer anyway. He also feuded regularly with Jimmy Valiant.
From Trapeze Artist to Memphis Mainstay
Born William Cruickshanks in Kirriemuir, Scotland, on October 24, 1943, Dundee spent his childhood in Melbourne, Australia, and came to the business by way of the big top. A circus took him on at 16, and he swung as a trapeze artist there before turning to wrestling in 1962. Australia held him for more than a decade before he relocated to the United States, and the Memphis territory got its first look at him in 1974. He became a fixture on the promotion’s television alongside longtime broadcasters Dave Brown and Lance Russell, who moved the show to WMC after Jerry Jarrett broke away in 1977.
His value to the territory ran well past his matches. Memphis was where he booked, and promoter Bill Watts’ Mid-South Wrestling employed him later, during the mid-1980s. His in-ring career took him through Jim Crockett Promotions, the CWA, the USWA, Power Pro Wrestling and WCW, where he signed in 1993 as “Sir William,” the monocled manager of Lord Steven Regal. A contract dispute ended that run in October 1994. A four-time CWA International Heavyweight Champion, Dundee believed WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker blocked a potential hiring — a claim he made on Interactive Wrestling Radio in 2019 and that neither the company nor The Undertaker has ever addressed.
Health Struggles and a Long Farewell
Dementia was the diagnosis his son disclosed in 2023, and Jamie Dundee, speaking on Dutch Mantell’s podcast, said it was stage three of four. No public information connects that diagnosis to Dundee’s death.
The Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted him in 2017 in a class that also featured Lawler, Jimmy Hart, Koko B. Ware, Brown and Russell. He spent much of his later career promoting, managing and working the independent circuit, and younger wrestlers he trained went on to win championships themselves. Dundee wrestled his final match on December 14, 2019 — an eight-man tag at the “Bobby Eaton: A Night of Appreciation” show in Knoxville, Tenn., in which he was on the losing side. He retired from in-ring competition that year, closing out a Memphis career that spanned more than half a century.
Wrestling ran in the family. Jamie Dundee was billed as J.C. Ice in what was then the WWF, and tag team great Bobby Eaton was married to Dundee’s daughter, Donna, until she died in 2021; Eaton died weeks later. Dundee was also predeceased by his wife, Beverly. The lasting image of “Superstar” for Memphis fans will be that tribute segment: a line of younger wrestlers waiting their turn to greet him.
