Mass Shooting Leaves 9 Dead, Including Children

A 45-year-old man fatally shot eight people — among them a pregnant woman, a five-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl — at his home in Erie, Pa., on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, before killing himself, authorities said as they laid out a detailed account of the killings at a news conference Saturday, Oct. 10.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the gunman was related to seven of the eight people he killed. The eighth victim was a friend of the pregnant woman. The total death toll, including the shooter, stands at nine in the lakefront city about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Pittsburgh.

What Officers Found Inside the Home

Video and audio evidence recovered by investigators captured muffled gunshot sounds from inside the house just before two distressed women arrived and began pounding on the door shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, Lorah said. The gunman then stepped outside and shot both women as they ran toward him, he said, before going back into the home. Witnesses described seeing a man firing a handgun outside the residence.

Responding officers found the two women dead on the ground outside. After sending in a drone and a robot, police entered and discovered the bodies of the five-year-old boy and the one-year-old girl on the first floor, two more women and two young men in a stairwell, and the shooter on the second floor. The suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The chief said he would not describe in detail what officers encountered inside, citing respect for the victims and their relatives, but he wanted residents to grasp how severe the toll has been on everyone touched by it. “This is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered,” Lorah said.

A Gunshot Alert and a SWAT Standoff

Officers reached the scene within minutes of an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection system that uses artificial intelligence and a network of microphones to pinpoint gunfire. Police surrounded the house with a SWAT team and tried to talk the suspect into surrendering.

No further shots were fired once police arrived, Lorah said. Noises that some in the neighborhood took for gunfire were flashbang devices — chemical munitions — set off by SWAT officers, he said.

Investigators Searching for a Motive

Lorah declined to discuss what may have driven the killings. Investigators plan to interview other relatives and to examine the cellphones belonging to the two women who were shot outside the house, hoping to learn what brought them to the door in the moments before they were killed. “They knew something was going on at that house,” the chief said.

District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz appealed to residents to stop circulating unconfirmed accounts of what happened, saying the families should not have to carry that added burden while they grieve. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

A Community in Mourning

Erie Mayor Daria Devlin addressed the victims’ relatives directly, telling them she was deeply sorry for the horror they had endured and that nothing said now could ease it. She said the entire city was grieving alongside them and would stand by them.

The city said in a statement that the killings had brought shock and sorrow to the community, that its thoughts were with the victims and everyone affected, and that officials would keep working with the Erie Police Department and release verified information as it becomes available.

Gov. Josh Shapiro said he had offered his administration’s full support to Mayor Devlin. Speaking at a campaign rally outside Philadelphia, the governor also addressed a separate incident in which two Philadelphia police officers were shot early Saturday, Oct. 10, calling it a dark day across the commonwealth.
