Nicki Minaj is coming to Washington to judge a pitch contest. The U.S. Small Business Administration said on August 31, 2026, that she will judge the live finale of its Million Dollar Pitch Competition alongside Grant Cardone and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, with actor Dean Cain hosting. The roster instantly drew comparisons to “Shark Tank” and to “The Apprentice,” President Donald Trump’s long-running reality franchise.
Five national finalists will pitch that panel and a live audience on September 18 in Washington, D.C. They will compete for pieces of a $1 million cash prize pool funded by the payment processor Clover Network, Inc.
Six days out, the agency has still not said where the finale will be held or how anyone can watch it. An SBA spokesperson told the New York Post the event would be broadcast on television and streamed online, with details to follow; none have. The agency’s own Freedom 250 page has not been updated at all, and still tells applicants the pitch will happen on one day between September 8 and 18, “to be finalized at a later time.”
SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler unveiled the lineup on X, calling all four public figures successful entrepreneurs in their own right. Their presence, the agency said, “will only add to the excitement of this historic celebration of free enterprise.” She promoted the event separately by saying the agency is bringing “boardroom energy” to Washington.
Five Finalists, One Prize Pool
No finalist goes home empty-handed. The winner collects $400,000, the runner-up $250,000, third place $150,000, fourth place $125,000 and fifth place $75,000.
Compotech, Inc. of Brewer, Maine, and Winton Machine of Suwanee, Ga., survived the cut, as did Plas-Tech Tooling of Garner, Iowa, Red River of Gillette, Wyo., and VetPowered LLC of San Diego. Four make things outright — composite ballistic panels, tube-bending machinery, injection molds, pressure vessels; VetPowered is closer to an industrial services firm.
The SBA says 1,182 small businesses from every state submitted pitches, judged on American competitiveness, innovation, economic impact and readiness to execute.
Judges Drawn From Trump’s Orbit
Gebbia serves in the Trump administration, which in August 2025 created the post of U.S. chief design officer and made him the first to hold it. He runs the National Design Studio out of it. His résumé runs past co-founding Airbnb: he started the factory-built home company Samara, and he holds board seats at Airbnb and Tesla.
Cardone leads Cardone Capital, which reports $5.4 billion in assets under management. The SBA’s release calls him a private equity fund manager; the firm invests in real estate, and Cardone has publicly positioned it against private equity. He also built the 10X Movement, anchors New York Times bestsellers on sales and scaling, and has loudly backed Trump’s tariff policy.
Minaj has broken records in hip-hop, and her business empire reaches across music, fashion, beauty and consumer products. Few celebrity supporters of the president are more visible. At a Treasury Department event at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium on January 28, she told the audience, “I am probably the president’s No. 1 fan, and that’s not going to change.” She pledged an estimated $150,000 to $300,000 to seed Trump Accounts, the tax-advantaged investment accounts for children, for the children of her fans.
Her post on X about the contest, published August 31, read: “This is a major, MAJOR KEY. Sooooooooooo looking forward to this!!! Imagine being a part of the Trump Administration’s initiative to support small businesses. Let’s GO!!!!!!!!!!”
Cain acknowledged the announcement on X, writing: “Honored!!” Minaj also replied to Loeffler’s post: “Hi, Kelly! See ya soon :)”
The praise has flowed both ways. At a White House Black History Month reception on February 18, Trump said of the rapper, “She’s so beautiful,” then went on to praise her skin and her long nails.
Cain, the host for the night, became famous playing Superman on “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and later fronted “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” He announced in August 2025 that he was joining Immigration and Customs Enforcement and urged others to enlist; the Department of Homeland Security then said he would be sworn in as an honorary ICE officer. No account of a ceremony has been published.
Freedom 250 and the Reality TV Push
The agency launched the contest on May 13 under the name “Patriot Pitch,” part of its Freedom 250 programming marking 250 years of American free enterprise, and required entrants to have at least three years of operating history. Other corners of the administration have leaned on the same spectacle-driven approach to the country’s 250th anniversary. Mixed martial arts fighters took the South Lawn of the White House on June 14, when the Trump administration hosted UFC Freedom 250.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also produced a six-part YouTube series, “The Great American Road Trip,” likewise billed as a celebration of the anniversary. Millions of dollars in corporate sponsorships funded it, among them companies his department regulates — Boeing, Toyota, United Airlines, Shell, Royal Caribbean, Enterprise and Lyft, among others — raising questions about possible ethics violations.
The format of the pitch contest has invited inevitable comparisons to Trump’s own television history. Contestants on “The Apprentice” competed for a top job or an investment across 15 seasons between 2004 and 2017, 14 of them with Trump as host, and observers widely credit the show with raising the president’s national profile ahead of his 2016 election win.
Critics have described the finale as a reality TV stunt; the agency casts it as a tribute to Main Street. The five companies making the trip face stakes more concrete than the star power around them: growth capital, handed out on camera.
The September 18 event will settle whether the night reads as a real showcase for American manufacturers or as one more installment of the administration’s reality-television playbook. Assuming, six days out, that anyone can find it.
