Sean Hannity’s Odd FOX News Moment Stuns Viewers

Sean Hannity went looking for a silver lining in the Republican midterm wreckage and found one that belongs to three presidents who were still allowed to run again.

The Fox News host delivered the line on an election-night panel Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, as returns poured in from across the country with control of both chambers of Congress on the line. “I wish it was two years ago,” Hannity told viewers, reaching back to President Donald Trump’s 2024 victory, when he carried both the Electoral College and the popular vote.

“And I can announce I’m not moving to Ireland,” he added, in what appeared to be a jab at liberal commentators who had threatened to leave the country if Trump won a second term.

A History Lesson With a Hole

From there, Hannity walked his audience through a long stretch of midterm history — one he acknowledged offered Republicans little comfort. His thesis was simple enough: midterm elections are predictable, he argued, and the bigger the personality in the White House, the uglier the party’s losses two years into the term.

Then came the examples. Ronald Reagan won the presidency in 1980, watched Republicans take a beating in the 1982 midterms and came back to win reelection in 1984 in a 49-state landslide. Bill Clinton, Hannity noted, followed roughly the same arc. So did Barack Obama, who won in 2008, absorbed the Tea Party wave of 2010 and was reelected two years after that. Politics, in Hannity’s telling, runs in cycles.

The comparison skipped one detail that no amount of ebb and flow can fix. Trump is already serving the second of the two terms the Constitution permits. Unlike Reagan, Clinton and Obama, he cannot appear on another presidential ballot, which leaves no reelection comeback for the cycle Hannity described to deliver.

Two Southern Senate Seats Change Hands

The results behind the lament were piling up as Hannity spoke. Democrats banked several pickups, including in North Carolina, where The Associated Press projected Democrat Roy Cooper had defeated Republican Michael Whatley for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Thom Tillis. In South Carolina, CNN projected that Democrat Annie Andrews would win the seat held by Republican Sen. Darline Graham, who was appointed after the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham.

CNN also projected that Democrats would retake the House of Representatives. Many ballots were still being counted Tuesday night, but the early picture pointed in one direction, and it was not the one Fox’s prime-time lineup had spent the week building toward.

His Message Two Days Later

On Nov. 5, the network aired a 37-second clip titled "Sean Hannity gives his post-midterm message,” in which the host laid out next steps for the Republican Party after Democrats dominated the midterms. It ran on “Hannity,” filed under the show’s midterm elections tag.

Hannity’s election-night detour through Reagan, Clinton and Obama was offered as reassurance, and he said up front that it would not reassure anyone. What he did not mention was the piece of the pattern that stops at Trump: the part where the president on the losing end of the midterms goes back to the voters two years later and wins.
