Trump Falls Into Obama’s Brilliant Snare

A joke about gold paint and a chain restaurant was supposed to die over a weekend, and instead it sent the president back to the microphone to defend his own drywall.

Jordan Klepper, host of “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central, spent much of his monologue on Tuesday night, Oct. 27, 2026, picking apart conservative media’s meltdown over a quip former President Barack Obama made about President Donald Trump’s White House decor, and delivered a message to the president: he had walked right into a trap.

Obama, 65, set the whole thing off at a Cleveland rally on Saturday, Oct. 24, where he was stumping for Ohio Democratic candidates Amy Acton and Sherrod Brown ahead of the midterms. He asked what was going on with all the gold at the White House, and told the crowd: “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory. Just gold everywhere.” He added that the president’s renovation streak would make for decent HGTV programming.

The quip went viral over the weekend. Conservative pundits accused Obama of elitist disconnect for comparing a chain restaurant’s decor to Trump’s Oval Office. That is where the messaging got tangled.

Page Three or Page 18

Klepper ran two supercuts back to back. The first showed personalities casting Obama’s joke as a swipe at working-class Americans who eat at the chain. The second showed the same side insisting the restaurant is actually kind of fancy, including voices on Fox News.

The chain could not be a modest hangout for working families and a playground for billionaires and the Illuminati at the same time, Klepper said. “It just doesn’t make any sense,” he told viewers. He recognized an attempt to launch a fresh culture war outrage cycle, he told the pundits, but their story was not coordinated.

So he brought out a prop: an actual Cheesecake Factory menu. He assigned the blue-collar camp to the appetizers on page three and the fancy camp to page 18, where the appetizers pick back up.

Nobody Defended the Gold

Klepper saved his sharpest observation for last. Across every clip he aired, not a single person defended how the White House actually looks — the thing Obama was mocking in the first place. Obama’s underlying criticism, Klepper reminded the audience, was Trump’s fixation on home renovations, which made avoiding the subject entirely the smart move.

Trump, 80, did the opposite. Instead of letting the crack slide, he answered it by talking up his White House makeover at length. A montage showed him telling reporters that he had taken care of the White House with the finest artisans in the world, that the exterior plaster had been cracked and the paint terrible, and that he had reskinned the building beautifully.

“I think you fell in the trap,” Klepper said.

A fuller stretch of the president’s rambling rally remarks on the renovations ran like this: “We made a mold of the good one, and we put it on the other one, and we got it all beautiful.”

A Four-Word Review in Corinth

Klepper offered a remedy. The president should head to his rally in Corinth, Miss., and prove Obama wrong by discussing literally anything else. The footage that followed showed the opposite.

At the Monday, Oct. 26, rally in Corinth, Trump was back on his decor, with a four-word review of his own handiwork: “I fix things very good.” Klepper’s response to that line is not printable here. He did allow one note of praise: “I will say, it is refreshing to hear Donald Trump talk about something he actually has a working knowledge of.”

He closed with a request. He was not expecting a fix for inflation or the war, he said, but for the sake of the president’s reputation, it was time to get back to talking about asses — a reference to Trump’s own campaign remarks, including his description of Ohio Sen. Jon Husted’s physique, “I’ve never studied the body of a man before; it’s not my thing,” and, earlier that week, his gushing over Nicki Minaj’s “beautiful a–.”

The midterms have gone full Cheesecake Factory, in Klepper’s telling, with the country arguing about appetizer pages instead of policy. He is not alone in finding the furor strange; comedian Jon Stewart was also baffled by the MAGA outrage over Obama’s remark.

Obama kept at it. At a campaign stop in Georgia, as reported Oct. 29, he said, “The president wasn’t even mad about the Saddam Hussein comparison.” He continued: “That part didn’t bother him. But he was very upset about the Cheesecake Factory.”

“The Daily Show” airs weeknights at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
