Rain swept across a Caribbean parade ground, and King Charles III wanted to know — loudly, with both arms in the air — where his umbrella had gone.
Cameras caught the monarch, 77, waving his arms and demanding cover from aides after a torrential downpour broke over an event marking the 45th anniversary of Antigua and Barbuda’s independence on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026. He had arrived at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium to inspect troops at the country’s annual Independence Parade when the sky opened.
“Where’s my umbrella?” the king asked, throwing his arms up and miming the act of holding one above his head.
Camilla Got the Clear Umbrella
The queen was covered first. Queen Camilla was handed a see-through umbrella and escorted out of the elements, while Charles was left standing in the open, still gesturing, still asking. An aide eventually reached him with one of his own.
The soaking lasted about five minutes. Once the rain eased off, the parade carried on and the king completed his inspection of the troops.
The Leaky Pen and the Lipreader
Charles has been filmed losing patience in public before, and more than once the culprit was an object rather than a person. At a signing ceremony in Northern Ireland in 2022, a leaky pen got the better of him in front of the cameras.
“Oh God, I hate this,” Charles said, and he walked away from the pen still complaining about it.
A year later came the coronation. A lipreader studying footage of the procession concluded that the king was venting about delays and about the tedium of the wait as he sat in his state carriage. He was photographed in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach in Westminster on May 6, 2023.
Another Downpour, This Time in Jersey
Bad weather has set him off before. On a 2024 visit to Jersey, the British Crown Dependency off the northwestern coast of France, Charles was pictured gesturing angrily at aides to help Camilla as she tried to put her coat on in another downpour.
Sources said in 2024 that the king is quick to anger, describing a temper that flares easily. One aide traced the flashpoint to anything Charles reads as incompetence, saying he has no patience for fools.
A Rare Night Out With William
The king is not the only royal the lens has studied for a flicker of discomfort. Charles and his heir, Prince William, made a rare joint appearance in London on Oct. 9, 2025, attending a pre-COP30 evening at the Natural History Museum, where an awkward moment between father and son was caught on camera.
The ceremony in Antigua was one stop on a nine-day Caribbean tour. The nation gained full independence from the U.K. in 1981, and the parade that marked the 45th anniversary resumed as soon as the weather allowed.
“I’ve started growing watercress on my trousers,” the king reportedly said afterward of the strength of the sudden rainfall.
