Colombian beauty content creator Sofia Murillo was killed on Aug. 8, 2026, when a tour helicopter carrying her and two relatives plummeted into forest near Rio de Janeiro’s Vista Chinesa viewpoint, sparking a fire that consumed the aircraft and surrounding vegetation. The 17-year-old died along with her mother, Wendy Manrique, 37, her grandmother, Rocio Cubillos, 59, and pilot Alessandro Rocha. All four occupants perished when the Robinson R44 struck a wooded hillside inside Tijuca National Park.
Murillo had amassed a following of more than 250,000 across social media platforms, with her TikTok account drawing over 200,000 followers and her Instagram nearly 50,000. Her content focused on makeup tutorials, beauty product reviews, and skin and hair care advice, along with “get ready with me” videos. Her Aug. 5 TikTok post featured portions of her gym routine, while an Aug. 1 Instagram upload documented her cosmetics application. Thousands of fans have since turned her pages into memorial spaces, leaving tributes under her final uploads.
“Rest in peace angel,” a follower posted. A different user said Murillo had been among the rare creators whose advice genuinely improved their confidence.
Split Flights for Six Relatives
Six family members had traveled from Bogotá to Rio to mark a quinceañera celebration, the coming-of-age party held on a girl’s 15th birthday. Because the four-seat helicopter could accommodate only three passengers besides the pilot, the group divided into two. Murillo’s uncle, Victor Manrique, waited at the departure facility with his spouse and teenage daughter, planning to take the second tour. The aircraft operated by Voo Rio Panorâmico lifted off shortly before 11 a.m. local time for a 20-minute panoramic flight over landmarks including the Christ the Redeemer statue. It went down at about 11:11 a.m. in the Alto da Boa Vista area, erupting in flames.
Manrique and his family learned of the disaster through news reports while still waiting at the airport. He told Brazilian media outlet g1 that the family had used the remainder of their vacation savings and a credit card to book the tour. In his account to the publication, he described his niece as dedicated and industrious, adding, “We were a very happy family.”
Difficult Recovery Effort
Emergency crews faced steep, rugged terrain. Fire department spokesman Lt. Col. Fábio Contreiras reported that responders mobilized scores of government and private vehicles along with several operational units. Responders required climbing ropes and specialized equipment to reach the wreckage, and extinguished fuel-fed flames before recovering the victims’ remains.
Rio de Janeiro’s Civil Police and the Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) have opened separate inquiries. CENIPA, an investigative arm of the Brazilian Air Force, is analyzing wreckage fragments for mechanical evidence. Officials anticipate an initial report within weeks, though a complete analysis will likely require months. Investigators note that extensive fire damage could compromise any flight-data recovery. The cause of the helicopter’s downing has not been established.
Legal counsel for Voo Rio Panorâmico stated the operator has reached no conclusion about the cause, while emphasizing that the pilot’s credentials were valid, regulatory authorizations were current, and maintenance records were up to date. The Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) verified the helicopter’s airworthiness documentation. Scenic flights fall under specialized aviation operations, which mandate specific technical approvals for equipment and personnel; ANAC announced it is coordinating with municipal authorities on shared regulation of these services.
Calls for Safety Review
Rio’s mayor has formally ordered urgent inspections across the aerial tourism sector, proposing actions that may include halting sightseeing helicopter operations while the review unfolds. This tragedy follows by approximately two months another fatal helicopter collision that claimed six lives — including musician Oliver Tree and YouTuber Gaspi — above Recreio dos Bandeirantes on the western side of Rio.
Investigators have yet to answer the central questions about the crash, and relatives of the four deceased face a wait that may stretch many months before receiving conclusions.
