A single wrong number, off by roughly a dollar, was enough to flip the story of American gas prices upside down on Fox News screens — and on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the network went on the air to take it back.
The retraction followed a graphic broadcast the previous day that told viewers fuel was cheaper now than it had been 12 months earlier. In reality, drivers are paying substantially more, and analysts have pinned most of that increase on the fallout from President Donald Trump’s war on Iran.

Two of those three numbers were fine. The graphic listed the current national average at $4.06 a gallon and the year-earlier price at $4.13 — a comparison that made it look as though costs had eased. Media critic Aaron Rupar caught it first, posting a screenshot to the social media platform X on Monday and noting that the correct year-ago number was somewhere around $3.14, nowhere near $4.13. The post spread quickly, and the scrutiny landed well before the network said anything.
Setting the Record Straight on Air
Both “America Reports” and Fox Business ran corrections Tuesday. Fox Business correspondent Ed Lawrence handled the one on “America Reports,” addressing the bad figure without hedging.
“Yesterday, we aired a graphic that showed gas prices incorrectly last year were $4.13 a gallon,” Lawrence said. “They were in fact $3.13 a gallon, that’s 90 cents more in the past year.”
He closed with a forecast from the administration: “The Trump administration says those gas prices will fall quickly once the operations in Iran end.”
Neither correction explained how the number got on the screen to begin with. Whether it was a typo, a production breakdown, or something else was never spelled out publicly. Retractions like this are rare for the network to begin with.
A Standoff at the Strait of Hormuz
The year-over-year climb has a clear backdrop. Most of the increase has been traced to the ripple effects of the military campaign the president launched against Iran in February, along with the still-unresolved confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow channel that carries an enormous share of the world’s oil.
That deadlock has tightened global supply chains and driven costs higher, and American drivers have felt it at the pump for months.
Why a Dollar Made All the Difference
Because the phantom $4.13 sat above the real $4.06, the graphic didn’t just muddy the picture — it reversed it, suggesting relief at the pump during a stretch when prices have measurably gone the other way. Compared with the same point in 2025, gas is up more than 90 cents a gallon, a figure that carries obvious political freight as the administration deals with the economic aftershocks of its foreign policy.
Timing matters, too. By the time Tuesday’s on-air fix ran, the false comparison had already gone out over two networks and been picked apart online. Anyone who watched Monday and skipped the next day’s broadcast was left with the wrong impression intact.
Energy costs have emerged as one of the sharper economic dividing lines of 2026, and how they’re reported shapes who the public blames and which direction voters think things are heading. Missing the baseline by a full dollar wasn’t a rounding problem. It rewrote the entire narrative.
