Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton touched off a torrent of conservative mockery after she told an audience on Monday, August 24, 2026, that her party’s ideological “experiment” involving democratic socialist candidates is good for Democrats.
Her remarks came at Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York, at an event hosted by the Hamptons Institute that focused on diplomacy, national security and global leadership. The moderator asked Clinton where the Democratic Party is headed as it works through what he described as a significant upheaval pitting the center-left against democratic socialists.
“The Democratic Party right now is, I think, going through a kind of experiment, like who can actually respond particularly to young people’s very real concerns about where they are at this point in their lives and what kind of future do they have for themselves?” Clinton replied. “I think that is healthy.” The characterization immediately triggered conservative backlash from critics who said she had given her blessing to the party’s socialist wing.
Clinton, a matriarch of the Democratic Party, defeated democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders for the 2016 presidential nomination. Her comments arrive as socialists wage primary fights against establishment-backed Democrats around the country and pile up nominating victories with the midterm campaign heating up.
Conservatives Seize on Her Comments
In a post on X, the Republican National Committee labeled the assessment insane, saying Clinton had portrayed her party as trying out far-left candidates who would do away with prisons and borders in an effort to win over young voters.
Influencer Jack Posobiec fired back by challenging Clinton to launch another presidential campaign in 2028. Tim Young, a media fellow at the Heritage Foundation, quipped, “Easy for her to say when she has her own security team.”
Mario Nawfal, amplifying the party-experiment framing on X, wrote: “The problem? Dems who want to abolish prisons and borders.” Conservative Brief said courting socialist candidates in hopes of attracting younger voters was the very definition of insanity.
Another user on social media said Democrats will do whatever it takes to win, pointing to Clinton’s losing 2016 presidential bid and asserting that the party is well aware socialism has never succeeded.
Clinton Turns the Socialism Charge Around
At the same event, Clinton redirected the socialism accusation toward the White House, saying she finds it amusing when President Donald Trump and his allies bring up socialism and communism. She charged that the administration practices what she termed “socialism for the rich,” a system she said insulates those who are already comfortable from risk and loss while deploying the machinery of government for the benefit of Trump, his associates and his allies.
Trump has seized on the leftward drift as a line of midterm attack, tagging recent left-wing winners of Democratic primaries as “hardcore, godless communists.” He has also gone after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rent-freeze plan, predicting it would drive the city’s apartment buildings into sharp decline.
Socialist Groups Reach Out to Young Families
The furor over Clinton’s remarks coincided with a separate controversy in deep-red South Carolina, where the Charleston chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) faced sharp criticism for a Facebook ad that recruited members to babysit during chapter meetings and to help raise what the group described as its “next generation of comrades.” A Zoom training session was set for that same Monday evening, open to adults regardless of whether they have children.
Critics called the initiative indoctrination. Adam Morgan, founding chairman of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, wrote: “DSA childhood training for future ‘comrades’ in SOUTH CAROLINA! These people must be investigated.”
The South Carolina Republican Party’s account said socialism has become more than a GOP talking point in the state, contending that far-left organizations are building a presence in local communities and setting their sights on the next generation. The state is still solidly Republican ground: Trump won it by almost 18 points in 2024, and it has gone for the Republican nominee in every presidential race since 1980.
An earlier social media post showed that the Charleston chapter had held a “Comrades With Kids hangout,” at which parents brought their children for card games, crafts and similar activities. DSA members also marched in Washington, D.C., on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025, holding signs that read “SOCIALISM BEATS FASCISM.”
The conservative account Libs of TikTok linked the training to Mamdani, alleging that the mayor is providing free babysitting in order to turn children into socialists and claiming comparable efforts are cropping up around the country. Child care sits at the heart of the agenda of Mamdani, a democratic socialist, whose initiatives include the city’s “Parents’ Night Out” program. Nearly 300 children attended the August 16 sessions, held at one recreation center in each of the five boroughs and running from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. for children ages six to 13.
Taken together, the two controversies underscore the fight shaping the midterm campaign, with Republicans eager to attach the socialist label to Democrats up and down the ballot and party figures like Clinton arguing that ideological churn is a sign of vitality rather than collapse.
