Nicolas Cage revealed in an interview published May 29, 2026, that he was the person who convinced Johnny Depp to pursue acting when the two became friends in Los Angeles during the 1980s, a decision that would reshape Depp’s entire professional trajectory.
When they first met, Depp was completely dedicated to his music career, working various odd jobs to make ends meet while trying to determine his next move. Cage, who had already appeared in “Rumble Fish” and was establishing himself as a working actor, recognized potential in his new friend that Depp hadn’t yet identified in himself.
The introduction happened through Lori Anne Allison, Depp’s then-wife, who thought her husband would connect well with her friend Nicolas Cage. The hunch proved correct, and the two struck up an immediate friendship. During a casual conversation, Cage suggested that Depp should consider acting, a proposition that initially struck Depp as ridiculous given his complete focus on his band.
However, the idea began to make practical sense to Depp as a potential revenue stream to support his true passion for music. Cage recently explained that he encouraged Depp to stop second-guessing himself and simply give it a chance rather than dwelling on the decision.
The financial situation made acting even more appealing. After more than six years performing in bands with minimal financial success, Depp was completely broke — so desperately short on cash that he’s been rumored to have stolen sandwiches from a Seven-Eleven just to survive.
How Two Future Stars Crossed Paths
Cage connected Depp with his own agent, and the meeting exceeded all expectations. Despite Depp’s complete lack of acting experience, the agent was immediately impressed and signed him right away.
The agent’s first move was to send Depp to audition for a new Wes Craven film. The challenge was that the character had been written as a tall, blond-haired football jock, which didn’t remotely describe Depp. He arrived at the audition wearing earrings and sporting spiked hair, bearing no resemblance to the description on the page.
“I showed up for the part looking like a f**king catacomb dweller,” Depp has said of the moment.
Despite his unconventional appearance, Depp had prepared thoroughly and delivered his lines flawlessly. He also benefited from an unexpected advantage — Craven’s daughter and her friends were present at the reading, and they responded enthusiastically to Depp. Craven paid attention to their reaction, and that proved decisive in his decision to cast Depp as Glen Lantz in 1984’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The role became Depp’s first film appearance and set the stage for his later success, including his breakout on television’s “21 Jump Street.”
The Audition That Changed Everything
“Nightmare on Elm Street” transformed Depp’s financial circumstances immediately. He worked on the film for six weeks, earning $1,200 to $1,500 a week — more money than he had ever made.
Newly motivated, Depp dedicated himself to studying the craft. He began researching method acting and pursuing more serious dramatic roles that genuinely interested him. Although “Nightmare on Elm Street” became a hit, subsequent opportunities didn’t materialize quickly, and he accepted any available work to maintain a steady income.
Life After the Big Break
Depp’s subsequent project was a student film titled “Dummies,” directed by Laurie Frank. He was paired with a young actress named Sherilyn Fenn, and during the three-day production, they developed such strong chemistry that they began dating and quickly fell in love. He was twenty-two, she was seventeen, and they soon moved in together.
During this same period, his band The Kids disbanded. Depp also joined The Rock Angels, a Florida group that had performed on the same circuit as The Kids. He became their guitar player during the peak of glam rock, maintaining his dream of a music career even as his acting resume expanded. He subsequently appeared in “Private Resort” alongside Rob Morrow, an eighties teen film that failed commercially at release but has since gained cult status among fans.
Years later, both Cage and Depp have achieved widespread fame — and according to Cage, their friendship has endured throughout. Not a bad outcome from one casual conversation in Los Angeles.
