Duane Ollinger, whose conviction that millions in Aztec gold lay hidden beneath his Utah property fueled the Discovery Channel series “Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch,” died on June 3, 2026, at age 68, following a prolonged struggle with ALS.
The former oil contractor from Texas had withdrawn from appearing on camera as his condition worsened. His death was reported by The Daily Beast, citing TMZ. It marks the end of a life defined by high-stakes gambles — first in the oil fields, then in the ground beneath a 160-acre ranch he believed held a fortune.
A Healing Center That Became a Treasure Hunt
Duane Ollinger and his son Chad, both from Texas, initially bought the eastern Utah land intending to create a holistic healing center. But the property, located near the notorious Skinwalker Ranch — a site with a longstanding reputation for paranormal activity — drew trespassers convinced that Aztec gold, supposedly concealed by early Mormons, was buried there. Locals viewed the area as cursed, marked by unexplainable and disturbing occurrences.
The Ollingers came to share that belief in hidden treasure. They theorized that a maze of underground caverns beneath the ranch held millions of dollars in lost Aztec and Spanish gold. The property also contained rare metal deposits, including iridium.
“Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch” launched on Discovery Channel in 2021, chronicling the father-son team as they drilled, dove and dynamited through barriers in pursuit of riches. The series followed their exploration of various caverns that tantalized with the promise of magnificent treasure but seldom yielded it easily.
“Duane Ollinger has sunk everything he has into hunting for what he believes is a vast fortune of gold on his property,” the show’s synopsis reads. “But with each step he takes closer to finding the treasure, the land seems to hold on tighter, stopping him in his tracks.”
How the Ranch Got Its Name
The ranch’s peculiar name originated from a startling find. When Duane and Chad drilled through to the caverns below, water surged upward — bringing with it hundreds of frogs, many of them blind. Holes above and below ground appeared to plunge toward the earth’s center. In a November 21, 2023, interview with the Idaho Press, the Ollingers characterized the location as abnormal, a remote Utah expanse where the bizarre seemed to lurk just below the surface.
Chad evolved into an entrepreneur as the series gained traction, organizing expeditions on the property and helping establish Blind Frog Ranch Outpost & Tours, which gave fans the opportunity to experience the site firsthand. Duane remained the show’s emotional anchor — the gruff, pragmatic patriarch whose belief in the treasure never faltered, even when his finances did.
Tragedy Compounds
In December 2025, the Ollinger family faced catastrophe when Chad Ollinger was charged with open murder after his cellmate was discovered dead from blunt force injuries during Chad’s time in prison. A Las Vegas judge ordered him to undergo treatment at a mental health facility in January 2026 after determining he was legally incompetent.
The charges came as Duane’s health deteriorated, throwing both the show and the family into turmoil. Treasure hunter Josh Feldman assumed the lead role at the start of season six after Duane became too ill to continue. The season’s first episode aired on May 28, 2026, mere days before Duane’s passing.
The Search That Never Ended
Duane Ollinger never proved to his numerous doubters that the gold he pursued actually existed. Yet the program attracted a devoted viewership that returned season after season, eager for the next drill site, the next sonar scan, the next eerie find. For Duane, the quest was literal, not symbolic. He was convinced the treasure was there, and he was determined to unearth it.
He leaves behind a property still shrouded in enigma, a television series that continued beyond his time on screen, and a son whose fate remains in question. In essence, the cavern doors never shut. They simply outlasted the man who devoted his final years attempting to force them open.
