Horrific Crash Leaves 11 Dead, Including Schoolchild

On January 29, a deadly traffic accident occurred near Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, resulting in the death of eleven individuals, including a 13-year-old school child. The incident involved a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on the R102 near Lotus Park around 7:30 a.m., leaving several critically injured and confined within the wreckage.

According to Garrith Jamieson, a representative for ALS Paramedics, the crash led to an array of fatalities and severe injuries, emphasizing the severity of the incident. Emergency services reported that seven individuals were in critical condition following the collision.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma stated that the casualty count was preliminary. “Witnesses have alleged that the truck driver made a U-turn resulting in a head-on collision,” he said.

The truck exited the road during the collision and sandwiched the taxi against a tree. The minibus driver was among those critically injured and confined in the mangled metal. The eThekwini fire department was present at the scene, freeing patients from the wreckage.

This accident follows closely on the heels of another fatal crash in Johannesburg on January 19, which claimed the lives of 14 schoolchildren. Authorities stated that the minibus driver was trying to overtake several vehicles when it collided with a truck. The 22-year-old driver was initially charged with an offense similar to manslaughter, but the charges were later escalated to murder.

Barbara Creecy, South Africa’s Transport Minister, expressed her concern about the rising number of traffic fatalities involving public transportation. She asked the Road Traffic Management Corporation to work with local officials to investigate the incident.

In South Africa, minibus taxis are a primary mode of public transportation, transporting nearly 70% of daily commuters. They are crucial in supporting transport networks across both urban and rural parts of the country.

Road safety is a significant concern across Africa. The continent records approximately 300,000 road-related deaths annually, making up almost a quarter of all fatalities worldwide, despite having only 3% of the global vehicle fleet. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa reports that the region has the highest traffic death rate globally, with 26.6 fatalities per 100,000 people, compared with the worldwide average of 18.

The recent crash near Durban underscores the ongoing issues plaguing South Africa’s transportation sector. As the nation grapples with enhancing safety standards whilst maintaining affordable transportation options for millions of commuters, authorities continue to investigate the factors contributing to this latest tragedy.

The occurrence of two significant minibus taxi crashes in close succession has amplified calls for a thorough reform of the industry and more comprehensive road safety measures. Transport officials are under increased pressure to address the systemic issues causing fatalities on South African roads while ensuring that crucial transportation services remain accessible to the millions who rely on them daily.

Data released earlier this month revealed that the country recorded 11,418 road fatalities last year, around 6.2 percent fewer than in 2024.
