The Canadian arts community is mourning the loss of Julien Arnold, a seasoned stage actor who died during a performance at an Alberta theater. Arnold, 60, was performing in a holiday production when he collapsed.
On Sunday, November 24, 2024, Arnold suffered a medical emergency (reportedly a heart attack) while on stage for the evening performance of “A Christmas Carol” at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta. Despite the immediate response from paramedics who arrived around 8:28 p.m., attempts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful.
In this particular production, Arnold had multiple roles, including Marley and Mr. Fezziwig. The show was planned to continue until Christmas Eve.
Arnold, a founding member of the Free Will Players theater company, was known for his contributions to Edmonton’s annual Freewill Shakespeare Festival. With a career that spanned over 30 years, he had an impressive range of roles, including the Cowardly Lion in “The Wizard of Oz,” Cogsworth in “Beauty and the Beast,” and Bottom in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
In memory of Arnold, the Citadel Theatre announced that the rest of this season’s “A Christmas Carol” performances would be dedicated to him. “His presence brought joy, heart and depth to every role, and his artistic contributions – and big hugs – will be deeply missed,” the theater said in a statement.
Punctuate! Theatre, where Arnold’s wife, Sheiny Satanove, is the managing director, also released a statement, describing Arnold as “a gifted performer” who passed away while engaged in his passion for theater.
The theater community has started a fundraising campaign to assist Satanove with funeral expenses, rent, groceries, and time away from work. The campaign has already collected over 55,000 Canadian dollars.
