Meghan Markle is reportedly feeling regretful over her ongoing feud with Kate Middleton. The Duchess of Sussex, 42, is said to be keen on making peace despite the genuine hurt she feels over their strained relationship.
The royal rift began when Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, retreated from their royal duties in 2020. Since then, the two women have been distant, with their last encounter occurring at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022. Meghan has not returned to London since.
A source close to the situation told In Touch, “She wants to make peace with Kate. She doesn’t want any bad blood between them.” This sentiment comes amid reports that Kate Middleton is undergoing chemotherapy, which has reportedly intensified Meghan’s desire to reconcile.
“Meghan’s friends say she regrets how things went down, and she never meant any harm to Kate. Though she must realize she could’ve done things differently,” the source added.
Despite Meghan’s desire for reconciliation, the likelihood of mending the relationship appears slim. Insiders claim that the damage caused by the ongoing feud might be too significant to overcome. According to former royal butler Grant Harrold, “too much damage” has been done for things to return to how they were.
Harrold, who once worked for King Charles III, also highlighted the challenge of reconciling when one party is a future monarch. “It’s difficult when you’re a future monarch,” he told the New York Post. “Harry caused damage and broke down trust.”
The fallout from the royal rift has been exacerbated by the Sussexes’ decision to participate in various tell-all projects. Their interview with Oprah Winfrey and the release of their six-part Netflix documentary unveiled bombshell private details about the tensions within the royal family. These revelations have only served to deepen the divide between the two camps.
Another insider told the media Prince Harry is more inclined to step back from the feud than Meghan. “Harry is more willing to move on, let’s just say that,” the source said. “It’s not a case of Meghan being difficult; she genuinely feels hurt and would like some kind of sit-down to hash things through — but that’s not something the other side is willing to consider now.”
Despite the deep-seated issues, Meghan is reportedly trying to extend an olive branch to her sister-in-law. “Meghan’s been going out of her way to show concern for Kate in this difficult time,” an insider shared.
However, royal experts remain skeptical about the possibility of reconciliation. The consensus is that the wounds are too deep and the trust too broken. Harrold emphasized that for the Sussexes to be let back into the royal fold, Prince Harry would need to issue a public apology for the hurt caused by his memoir, “Spare.”
Yet, such an apology seems unlikely, especially with rumors of Harry planning a second memoir once his estranged brother, Prince William, assumes the throne. This has cast further doubt on any potential reconciliation.
Meghan and Harry’s attempts to address their grievances publicly have been met with mixed reactions. Their efforts have resonated with some, but they have also alienated many within the royal family and the British public.
Despite these challenges, Meghan appears to be focused on trying to mend fences. Her reported desire to reconcile with Kate is a step towards healing, even if the path to peace remains uncertain.
