A tragic incident unfolded in Perth, Western Australia on Saturday night, May 4, leaving a community shaken. A 16-year-old boy was shot dead by police after allegedly stabbing a man in a hardware store parking lot.

Authorities believe the attack bore “hallmarks of terrorism,” according to Western Australia Premier Roger Cook. Cook said in a televised press conference, “There were indications the 16-year-old had been radicalized online. At this stage it appears that he acted solely and alone.”

The victim, a man in his 30s, was stabbed in the back and is in stable condition at a local hospital.

Disturbing Call and Community Action

The events began with a disturbing phone call. The teenager reportedly contacted police, indicating his intent to commit “acts of violence.” Shortly after, authorities received another call from a member of the public reporting a knife attack in progress at the car park.

Police Response and Failed Subduing Attempt

Three police officers responded to the scene. Two officers were equipped with tasers, while the third carried a firearm. According to authorities, the tasers were ineffective in subduing the teenager, who reportedly charged at the officers. Police Commissioner Col. Blanch stated, “The officers were faced with a very dangerous situation, and tragically, they were forced to use lethal force.”

Local Muslim Community Praised for Cooperation

The attack has highlighted the importance of community vigilance. Perth’s Muslim community was recognized for its role in preventing a potentially worse outcome. Police Commissioner Blanch commended them for flagging concerning behavior exhibited by the teen. Before the attack he had messaged people about “going in the path of jihad” and saying “I am a soldier of the mujahideen of al-qaeda”.

Syed Wadood Janud, the imam of Perth’s largest mosque, the Nasir Mosque, condemned the stabbing.

Countering Violent Extremism Efforts

The incident has reignited discussions about violent extremism in Australia. The 16-year-old had reportedly been involved in a Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program since 2022. These programs aim to steer individuals away from extremist ideologies. Australia has implemented various initiatives to address violent extremism, including the Safe and Together Community Grants Program. This program offers funding to organizations working to prevent vulnerable individuals, particularly young people, from adopting extremist views.

Prime Minister Offers Condolences and Assurances

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to those affected by the incident. “My thoughts are with those who have been affected by the incident in the Perth suburb of Willetton overnight,” Albanese said in a social media post. “We are a peace-loving nation and there is no place for violent extremism in Australia.”

Investigation Continues

The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing. Police are working to understand the full motive behind the attack.
