Macomb Community College in Clinton Township, Michigan, became the center of an investigation after the discovery of a body in the ventilation system of its Performing Arts Center.
The deceased was identified as Jason Thompson, a 36-year-old father of two, last seen on October 25. Thompson’s decomposed remains were found on November 26, after students and staff reported a foul odor emanating from the vent.
Thompson was last observed on security footage leaving his sister’s apartment in Sterling Heights, less than a mile from the college. He was reported missing to the Sterling Heights Police Department on November 1. His family, having searched for him for over a month, was confronted with the sad news.
Authorities, including college police Chief William Leavens, have said there is no indication of foul play. The Macomb County medical examiner is yet to determine the cause of death. Despite the ongoing investigation, details about how Thompson accessed the building and ended up in the ventilation system remain unclear. The ambiguity has led to skepticism among some students and Thompson’s family.
Thompson, who was not affiliated with the college, had a criminal record and was on probation at the time of his disappearance. His past involvement with the law included a prison sentence.
The college, while extending condolences to Thompson’s family and friends, has faced criticism for its lack of communication with students about the death on campus.
Thompson’s cousin started a GoFundMe campaign to help the family pay for his memorial service and put the remaining money in a trust fund for his two children.
