In a devastating accident on Friday evening, June 30, a truck collided with several vehicles and market traders, resulting in at least 51 deaths.
The incident took place in a region roughly 125 miles northwest of Nairobi, Kenya, an area infamous for its high rate of vehicle accidents. Rift Valley Police Commander Tom Odera reported 51 fatalities at the scene, and raised concerns about potentially more victims still trapped in the wreckage. The Kenya Red Cross Society announced 32 injured individuals who are now in the care of nearby hospitals, and appealed to the public for blood donations.
Rescue efforts were significantly hindered by heavy rains, leading to some victims remaining trapped in their destroyed vehicles. Following the incident, Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen visited the scene and declared a plan to move markets from highways, aiming to prevent similar future accidents.
President William Ruto, expressing his distress via Twitter, sent his condolences to the families of the victims and encouraged all drivers to practice safe driving habits. The truck that instigated the incident reportedly strayed from the main highway, colliding with several vehicles and pedestrians, which included traders. Pictures of the terrifying wreckage were shared by eyewitnesses, showing the extent of the disaster.
The Kenyan Red Cross Society established stations at local hospitals for people to report missing family members and offered emotional support to those grappling with the tragedy.
