A baby died following an incident involving a Chevrolet Camaro crashing into a home in Ohio on Tuesday, June 27.
The incident occurred in Tiffin, a city located about 55 miles southeast of Toledo.
The suspect, critically injured in the crash, was later identified as 23-year-old Johnathan Baker. He had allegedly abducted his girlfriend’s infant following a dispute between them.
According to Chief David Pauly, the police received an urgent lookout notice for a man from the nearby village of North Baltimore. The suspect, reportedly armed with a firearm, had forcibly taken the seven-month-old child and was en route to Tiffin in a yellow Camaro. Alarmingly, he had threatened to harm both himself and the infant.
An off-duty officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. However, the suspect sped away, triggering a police pursuit. The chase ended tragically when the suspect veered off the road, plowed through a front yard, and collided with a house, causing it to shift from its foundation.
Law enforcement surrounded the Camaro, eventually breaking the back window to retrieve the injured child. Responding officers noted that the baby was bleeding from the head and had breathing difficulties. Emergency medical services airlifted the infant and the suspect to a local hospital, but tragically, the baby succumbed to her injuries.
A loaded firearm and spent cartridges were discovered in the suspect’s vehicle. The Fostoria Police, along with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, are cooperating with the Tiffin Police Department in investigating the incident.
