A night that started as a lot of fun for a Taylor Swift fan turned tragic after he was killed in a hit-and-run while heading home from the artist’s concert in Houston, Texas.
Police in Houston reported that a hit-and-run driver caused the death of a Taylor Swift fan driving home from her concert. The victim, Jacob Lewis, aged 20, was attempting to push his car, which had become stalled on the Southwest Freeway, when he was struck by a black Volkswagen Beetle driven by Alan Bryant Hayes, 34, who subsequently fled the scene. Lewis was accompanied by his younger sister, April Bancroft, who was driving at the time of the accident and witnessed her brother’s death.
Lewis’s father, Steve Lewis, said that his son’s final act had been to push his sister to safety on the dark road. His parents described him as a bright light that touched many people’s lives. Lewis was a student at Sam Houston State University, studying musical theater. According to his family, the 20-year-old enjoyed playing video games, including Pokémon and Dungeons and Dragons.
Bancroft told reporters that she immediately ran to her brother and called 911. Paramedics pronounced Lewis dead at the scene.
Hayes drove away after fatally hitting Lewis, but he was followed by another driver to another street, where he abandoned his car. Police later apprehended him and charged him with third-offense felony driving while intoxicated, as well as failure to stop and render aid. Police took him to a hospital to get treated for minor injuries and then took him into custody.
According to Lewis’s mother, the 20-year-old, who had graduated from Taylor High School in Katy, spent his summers with Theater Victoria in Texas performing in musicals and was about to start his sophomore year at the university.
