Ben Affleck, 54, the actor, spoke publicly about the deaths of both of his parents this year in a GQ interview published Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, describing what the back-to-back losses did to his sense of how much time anyone gets.
Affleck told GQ: “It’s a big year of life. My brother [Casey Affleck] and I, our parents died just two months apart, beginning of April and June.” He added, “That’s a lot, man.”
A Diagnosis in December
His mother, Christopher Anne Affleck, known as Chris Affleck, died June 2 at age 83 at Ben Affleck’s Los Angeles home. Her death certificate gives the cause as cardiopulmonary arrest, with pancreatic cancer among other conditions leading to it. Her death did not become public until July.
She received her pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2025 and was given six months. She wanted to see her grandson graduate. The ceremony took place May 31, and she died two days later.
Chris Affleck graduated from Harvard University and taught in public schools for 35 years before retiring in 2008. She sat in the audience with her son and actor Matt Damon at the 1998 Academy Awards, when “Good Will Hunting” won Best Original Screenplay. Ben Affleck won a second Oscar as a producer of 2012’s “Argo,” and Casey Affleck won Best Actor for “Manchester by the Sea.”
Near the end, his mother told him she had lived a good life and regretted nothing, by his recollection. One line has stayed with him: “But I thought 83 years would feel like longer,” he recalled.
Casey Affleck’s Venice Disclosure
Casey Affleck, 51, the Oscar-winning actor and director, first disclosed their father’s death publicly at a press conference for his directorial feature “Company” at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on Tuesday, Sept. 8. He told reporters the film is dedicated to both of his parents, and he said he had wanted to show them the movie but never got the chance.
“I think they would’ve liked it,” he said.
The remarks were the first public word that the brothers’ father, Timothy Affleck, had also died. Casey Affleck did not reveal the date or the cause of his father’s death at that Sept. 8 appearance. The cause still has not been disclosed.
A Complicated Bond With His Father
Timothy Affleck had ambitions as a playwright and performed with the Theater Company of Boston alongside actors Dustin Hoffman and the late Robert Duvall. He also worked as a janitor, a mechanic and a bookie.
Ben Affleck described his Cambridge, Mass., childhood around his father’s jobs in Central Square in a 2022 interview. His father took bets at the Prospect Buffet bar. The brothers were later at the Cantab Lounge constantly, before and after his shifts.
His parents divorced in the 1980s, when Ben Affleck was 11, and his mother raised the brothers primarily. Timothy Affleck struggled with alcoholism, and he stopped drinking in 1990. Ben Affleck told People in 2020 that his father’s three decades of sobriety was the central lesson of his life. He has spoken openly about his own drinking.
He told GQ that his relationship with his father in Timothy Affleck’s final years was complicated and not close. He said he does not want to discuss the reasons publicly. His takeaway, he told the magazine, is that problems left unaddressed stay unaddressed.
The Time That Remains
Affleck first discussed the deaths publicly on the podcast “Streets We Grew Up On” on Sept. 30. He said the losses sent him back through his own childhood and deepened his appreciation of his mother’s sacrifices.
He expanded on that with GQ, calling his mother extraordinary and brave and saying her death pushed him to understand her life more fully. He said the grief is horrible without being tragic, and that parents dying in old age is the order things are supposed to follow. The worst outcome he can imagine, he said, is outliving his own children. He added that he is still really sad.
Affleck traveled with his three children after his mother’s death. He shares Violet, 20; Seraphina, 17; and Samuel, 14, with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner.
He said the question he is left with is less mourning than arithmetic: how to spend the time that remains, seeing how little of it there is.
