A teleprompter failure pulled Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, off the stage roughly seven minutes into his warning about artificial intelligence at the Clinton Global Initiative 2026 Annual Meeting in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026. Forty minutes passed before he could return and finish. The breakdown hit at an awkward moment — the summit’s “Getting Disruption Right” session, with Harry, 42, midway through a critique of Big Tech. Back at the microphone, he leaned into the irony: “Hello again,” he said. “So AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it. Interesting to see what it was so concerned about in part two.”
A Father’s Warning on AI
Speaking to a room that included Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, Harry centered his argument on children and on how fast the technology is moving. “I come to this as a father, one who has shared countless conversations with other parents as they mourned the loss of their children to recklessly built technology,” he said before the glitch cut him off. Harry is father to Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, and that lens shaped the whole address. Engineers, he argued, now build AI systems to pursue emotional attachment instead of mere screen time, and the pace of the technology has outrun what researchers, parents or regulators can track.
Two years earlier, he reminded the room, the same Clinton Global Initiative stage had hosted his launch of The Parents’ Network. He and Meghan Markle began that Archewell initiative after they met families whose children had died by suicide or suffered serious harm following experiences on social media. The count keeps climbing, he said: the hundreds of bereaved parents he described in 2024 now number in the thousands, and millions of families are living with the fallout of a digital boom that outran efforts to protect young people. “Social media learned how to capture our attention,” he told the audience. “AI is learning how to enter our relationships.” The systems being deployed now, he argued, are not content to be a tool — they want to be the confidant — and the damage from the last wave of “recklessly built technology” has already landed on a generation of children and parents.
Back in Britain, Not the Palace
Harry’s New York appearance came weeks after he moved his family back to the United Kingdom in August for an “extended period.” Archie and Lilibet share a home outside London with their parents now, though neither Harry nor Meghan will resume duties as working royals. Asked two days later how his return to his home country has gone, Harry said Friday: “It’s been great to be back on British soil. The kids are happy in school and it gives me a chance to be able to really focus on the Invictus Games in Birmingham in July next year.” He and Meghan reportedly moved the children to their new school in England for security reasons. Meghan remained at their new home in England during the trip.
Accounts of how that homecoming has landed inside the family are genuinely inconsistent. In some versions King Charles turned down a meeting with his son, wary of being seen alongside Harry’s ongoing legal battle against British tabloid publishers, a fight that includes a case against the Daily Mail’s publisher, Associated Newspapers. Other reporting describes a private family visit over the summer. The consistent thread runs elsewhere: the broader estrangement, which deepened after the 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, the 2022 Netflix docuseries and Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare,” remains unresolved. Prince William, too, has shown little appetite for reconciliation in the years since Harry and Meghan gave up their working royal roles in 2020 and moved to California.
The pattern of near-misses goes back further. His father’s cancer diagnosis became public in February 2024, sending Harry on a short, hurried trip to London, where the two met only briefly. He came back in May 2024 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, and a royal representative said the king was too busy for a meeting and that Harry understood the pressures on his father’s schedule. The two did eventually sit down for longer, privately at Clarence House in September 2025, during Harry’s visit for the WellChild Awards. Renewed friction reportedly followed even that encounter, with some palace sources characterizing the meeting itself as a misstep that hardened Charles’ subsequent posture toward his son.
Since the move back, the Sussexes have disputed the “private citizens” designation given to them by the Palace under King Charles’ guidance, wishing instead to be seen as public figures. Harry’s recent engagements include the 2026 WellChild Awards, the Diana Awards, the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting and a speech at the Skift Global Forum.
Once the technology cooperated in New York, Harry finished what he had come to say. The tech giants building today’s AI systems, he told the audience, are out to “find you, hook you, exploit you, break and then blame you.”
Bill Clinton thanked him publicly afterward. “Grateful to Prince Harry for joining us at #CGI2026 and challenging us to think carefully about how we shape AI — and make sure innovation serves people,” he wrote in an X post on Sept. 25.
Two days after the New York speech, Harry jumped out of a plane near Toronto on Friday to raise funds for the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre and the True Patriot Love Foundation. The jump made good on a promise he made last November to Ed Marshall, a 102-year-old veteran he met at the Sunnybrook Hospital veterans center. A medical evaluation barred Marshall from jumping, so his grandson Bailey jumped with Harry while Marshall stayed on the plane. “Ed’s been really excited about this. There’s no version where you can let a 102-year-old veteran down!” Harry told CTV after the jump.
