Melania stepped onto the escalator first, her gaze fixed straight ahead. Then, as Trump reached the moving staircase, a female reporter shouted out, “Watch the stairs! Be careful with the stairs!” The moment was captured in an X video from journalist Aaron Rupar.
Only then did the first lady react. She looked back toward the journalist and smiled, Atlanta Black Star reported, then turned the other way, shielding her mouth from the cameras, and said something to her husband.
This time, the machinery held up its end of the bargain. The escalator carried the Trumps to the top without pausing, and the ribbing was the only hitch in the climb.

Social media users seized on the first lady’s reaction as the clip spread. “Melania Trump found that funny. Trouble in paradise,” one X user wrote. Another commented, “Melania smiled. The Stoppage Behind the Joke
The heckle was a pointed reminder of September 2025, when the Trumps stepped onto the same escalator on their way to the president’s General Assembly speech and the machine abruptly quit moving. The couple climbed the remaining steps on foot, in front of the cameras waiting at the U.N. Coverage dubbed the affair “Escalatorgate.”
Trump worked the mishap into that year’s speech. “All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that, on the way up, stopped right in the middle,” he said. “If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen, but she’s in great shape. We’re both in good shape.” He later called the stoppage sabotage and said the people responsible should be arrested.
The United Nations offered a far more mundane explanation, saying a videographer traveling with Trump’s own delegation may have inadvertently triggered the escalator’s built-in safety function.
The president has kept retelling the story. “Fortunately, my first lady was very strong, and I was able to grab her back or another part of her body,” he told reporters during an Oval Office media session the week before the 2026 assembly. “It was actually a little bit lower than the back, and it kept me standing tall.
