First Lady Melania Trump is sitting out the Republican National Committee (RNC)’s first-ever midterm convention, a two-night affair in Dallas on September 9 and 10, 2026, that will otherwise revolve around her husband. President Donald Trump is slated to appear at the American Airlines Center on both evenings, closing the second night with the keynote address, while Vice President JD Vance speaks on opening night. A White House official disclosed the first lady’s plans, and no reason was provided; neither she nor her office has issued an attributable announcement.
The committee has billed the two nights as a launchpad for the November 3 elections. Every hour will carry its own theme, message and voices, RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said, describing a program designed to walk Americans through the party’s agenda and what is at stake in November. Across the two nights, the committee says, 109 items and speakers are planned.
The RNC’s formal call for the convention frames it as an occasion to celebrate Trump’s accomplishments and rally the party behind a shared vision. It also bars resolutions, elections or any other official business.
Dozens of Republicans Also Skipping
She has plenty of company in staying away. Out of roughly 70 Republican candidates and members interviewed, at least 45 GOP lawmakers told Politico they will not attend. Some cited prior commitments — a wedding, campus visits with teenage daughters, a dove hunt. Others said their hours are better spent campaigning back home, and some balked at the $25,000 entrance fee.
“I can’t control what the president’s going to say at the convention, but I can control where I’m at, what I’m doing,” Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.) told the outlet.
Barrett’s office put it more plainly to MS NOW: “He is not attending,” adding, “He feels he would be more useful back in Michigan doing what he does every district work period: meeting with and listening to the people, businesses and community leaders he represents in Congress.” Rep. Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) drew the same conclusion when he told MS NOW: “No, I’m going to be in my district because I think it’s more important to be in my district working for my folks.”
Nunn and Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) each told Politico they would not be there, and Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-Pa.) was also reported to be out. All three are running for reelection. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) are skipping as well. Independent voters are neither attending nor watching, one House Republican argued in dismissing the event to Politico as “a waste of time” and “a mess.”
The party pushed back on that picture. Interest in attending and participating has been “incredible,” RNC national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre told Politico, saying the convention would provide momentum to expand Republican majorities in November.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has gone the other way, saying he has been promoting the convention everywhere he goes. Each colleague has to make his or her own decision, the speaker said, predicting that those who show up will have a great time.
Steep Price Tags and Bad Timing
Time with the president in Dallas does not come cheap. A photo opportunity has been reported at $88,600 and roundtable appearances at $250,000, with Vance available for considerably less. Delegate status at the event, which has picked up the nickname “Trump-a-Palooza,” has gone for as much as $20,000.
The prices have not filled the room. With the convention days away, the party began giving seats away, running a public lottery that promised VIP treatment, pressing Republican operatives to hand out passes and blasting out unsolicited texts advertising free tickets.
The host city faces a bill of its own. The convention is expected to draw about 20,000 people to the American Airlines Center and to cost the city of Dallas more than $2 million in public-safety and logistical expenses. Reimbursement arrangements remain unresolved as of the city’s latest reported memo.
Then there is the calendar. The two evenings collide with the opening two games of the National Football League (NFL) season, and the gathering wraps one day before the nation observes the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Trump was originally booked for a single night and added himself to both; a party official told Reuters he wanted to set the tone for the entire convention.
MS NOW’s Jonathan Lemire argued on “Morning Joe” that the scheduling conflict would deprive Trump of the viewership he was after. Maggie Haberman of the New York Times agreed, noting that some in the president’s orbit privately acknowledge the booking was a mistake made because they had not been paying attention.
A First Lady Rarely Seen
Her decision fits a pattern of scarce public appearances since her husband’s second term began. One analysis counted 38 days on which she had been seen in public as of early August, a total that reached 40 by September 4. She was last out at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington on August 23. The White House afterward reportedly cropped Natalie Harp, the president’s executive assistant, out of its own video of the couple at the race.
Earlier, on August 20, she spoke in the Rose Garden about the expansion of her Fostering the Future Initiative — her first appearance alongside the president since the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19. “I heard you missed me,” she joked to reporters. She had passed on the rearranged White House Correspondents’ Dinner on July 24, and on the July 28 funeral of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a close Trump ally.
Campaign stops have never been her habit. Her appearances in the 2024 race were few. She turned out on the closing night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, days after a bullet struck Trump in the right ear in Butler, Pennsylvania, and she spoke at his Madison Square Garden rally in New York on October 27, 2024. She also spoke at the 2016 convention, where she faced accusations of plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s 2008 address; her speechwriter later took the blame.
Elsewhere, she has hardly been invisible. She starred in a $40 million Amazon documentary, and at a surprise news conference she denied any past association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She rebuked late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over an on-air remark about the president. She pushed the bipartisan Take It Down Act, aimed at revenge porn and explicit deepfakes, and she opened back-channel talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the return of captured Ukrainian children.
Putin and Trump spoke by telephone about Ukraine on September 8, and Putin used the call to note the first lady’s efforts to return Russian and Ukrainian children to their families, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, whose account was carried by TASS. Marc Beckman, an adviser to the first lady, has called her the most consequential first lady in American history.
The president arrives in Dallas with his approval rating in the low 30s, dragged down by the continuing war with Iran, an affordability crisis and a reignited trade fight with Canada. Democrats decided against staging a midterm convention of their own. And across both nights in Dallas, his wife will not be in the arena.
