RFK Jr.’s CNN Meltdown Shocks Everyone

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spent Thursday night, August 20, 2026, tearing into CNN anchor Erin Burnett in a lengthy post on X. The blast came one day after the Wednesday, August 19, edition of her program, “Erin Burnett OutFront,” carried a budget recipe from his new cooking series to a supermarket checkout and rang up a total roughly 3.6 times the figure he had promoted.

The dish at the center of it all: “Crispy Salmon Cakes with Apple, White Bean & Greens Salad,” priced on Kennedy’s YouTube program “The Real Food Show” at $19.64 for a family of four, or about $4.91 per person. Tom Foreman, a CNN correspondent, bought the same items at a neighborhood supermarket, cooked the same meal, and watched the register stop at $70.54.

Kennedy, 72, was not amused. “Trump Derangement Syndrome has so debilitated @ErinBurnett that she has abandoned both common sense and basic arithmetic,” he wrote. The network’s demand, as he described it, was that the show add up what every ingredient costs by the full package, no matter how little of it a recipe actually consumes. He asked whether a diner would expect a bill for the full bottle of ketchup after one squirt on a burger.

Where the $5 Math Comes From

Bookkeeping explains the gap between the two totals. The show’s per-serving figures cover only the fraction of each ingredient a recipe calls for, not the sticker price of the package a customer has to haul to the checkout. Foreman granted that this is the standard method for costing out recipes, but said the logic collapses the moment you step into a supermarket.

“They’re only pricing parts of it. And grocery stores don’t sell things that way,” Foreman said.

The line items make the case. Wild-caught sockeye salmon was listed on the program at $8.99; the cheapest fish of that kind Foreman turned up rang in at $24.04, and that was a sale price. Red onion counted as eight cents a serving, though the onion itself cost $1.03. The jar of avocado mayonnaise it had to be spooned from carried a price of $11.19, against a recipe share of 40 cents. Foreman said he could not work out how a shopper walks in with $20 and leaves with everything the recipe demands.

Leftovers, in Kennedy’s telling, are the whole idea. He says he wants Americans to reclaim their kitchens, with shelves stocked with quality staples that can stretch across many meals. Replies on X weren’t convinced, noting that supermarkets don’t sell ketchup by the squirt and that sockeye salmon is hardly a pantry item that keeps.

An Earlier Price Check, Same Outcome

CNN was not the first to run the numbers. Two weeks earlier, on August 6, Monica Hesse, a Washington Post columnist, fed Kennedy’s ingredient list item by item into the online cart of her nearest grocery store, choosing the cheapest option at every step. Her total came to $73.46 — a little more than $18 per person, about 3.7 times what the show claimed.

From Dietary Guidelines to YouTube

Kennedy debuted the series on July 30, traveling the country to cook alongside guest chefs. His department said it would teach viewers how to put together healthy meals for under $5 a serving “whenever possible.” Chef Andrew Gruel joined him in the opening installment for the salmon cakes now being scrutinized. Chef Robert Irvine was named among the chefs taking part, though he appears in neither posted episode; the second and so far final installment featured Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. Only two episodes had been posted as of Monday, August 31, and neither CNN nor Burnett has responded on air.

The show was built as a complement to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans released in January, which tell Americans to prioritize protein at every meal and push full-fat dairy, vegetables, fruits and whole grains under the banner “Eat Real Food.” Critics who say the guidelines cost more than ultra-processed food are flatly mistaken, Kennedy said in an interview with USA TODAY published the day the show premiered, pointing out that a fast-food meal now runs $12 to $14 and that a family can eat both better and cheaper at home. Cooking is a skill many Americans have lost, he said, and part of his department’s job is reacquainting them with it. The trend data runs the other way. An analysis of federal time-use diaries published in 2025 in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition found that 52 percent of men and 72 percent of women cooked on a given day in 2023, up from 36 percent and 69 percent two decades earlier.

Kennedy is a devoted booster of fermented food. He told the paper he used to carry sauerkraut with him until the complaints mounted, most of them from his wife. The show’s recipes feature kimchi, sauerkraut and yogurt. He cooks two meals a day — mainly eggs, bacon, burgers, steaks and fish — and says the stronger cook in the household is his wife, actress Cheryl Hines. His Make America Healthy Again movement describes itself as a campaign against chronic childhood disease, aiming to reduce environmental toxins, ultra-processed food and what he calls overmedicalization.
