At least 84 people are dead after an overloaded government-operated ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba on Aug. 11, 2026, with children reported among the victims and the full scope of the disaster still uncertain because an unknown number of passengers may never have been counted.
Zimbabwe’s disaster management agency confirmed the vessel had 114 adults plus five crew aboard when it went down — well beyond its stated capacity of 90 people. By Aug. 12, 77 survivors had been pulled from the lake. Police had announced an earlier death toll of 44 on the social media platform X, confirming that bodies had been recovered from the water, though they gave no figures on how many people remained injured or missing.
Children Among the Dead as Toll Climbs
State broadcaster ZBC reported that children were among those killed, though authorities did not immediately release a breakdown of victim ages. The death toll may not capture the full human cost of the disaster: official passenger figures reflected only ticketed adults, and children below the ticketing age could have been aboard without appearing in any manifest. That uncertainty means the number of people actually on the ferry when it capsized remains unknown.
ZBC broadcast footage of speedboats racing toward what appeared to be an overturned vessel as a helicopter circled overhead. An underwater search-and-rescue team was also deployed to comb the vast lake for additional victims and survivors.
Warning Signs Before Departure
Mutsa Murombedzi, a local member of Parliament, posted a video showing crowds on shore waving off the ferry at the start of its journey. The footage captured something troubling alongside the send-off: onlookers could be heard expressing worry about whether the aging vessel could handle the strong waves rolling across the lake that day.
Murombedzi said that residents of remote villages rely on the ferry for the roughly five-hour trip across the water to reach Kariba town. The ferry, operated by a government agency, serves as a vital transport link for communities along the shoreline that have few other options for reaching the town.
The vessel was loaded with at least 24 more passengers than its official capacity allowed, and the concerns voiced on shore proved tragically well-founded. It is not clear at what point during the five-hour journey the ferry capsized or what specific conditions triggered the disaster.

The tragedy unfolded on one of Africa’s most significant bodies of water. Lake Kariba ranks as the world’s biggest artificial reservoir measured by water volume, stretching more than 200 kilometers — about 124 miles — in length and reaching up to 40 kilometers, or roughly 25 miles, across at its widest points. The lake was formed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when a dam wall was constructed to block the Zambezi River, flooding the valley behind it.
The lake straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, with the official boundary running through its center. Rescue teams worked across the lake following the capsizing, and Zimbabwe’s disaster management agency provided the initial survivor and casualty figures on Aug. 12. However, police have not issued further updates on the number of people still unaccounted for or the condition of those who survived. The gap between the 77 people known to have been rescued and the at least 119 passengers and crew believed to have been aboard leaves a significant number of fates unresolved.
Because ticketing records did not capture all passengers — particularly young children who travel without individual fares — investigators may struggle to establish exactly how many people were on board when the vessel went down. That accounting challenge could mean the final death toll rises further as the search operation continues across the lake’s vast and deep waters.
