The precaution reflects years of public disclosures from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Harry, 41, and Markle have aired grievances about the family in their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the 2022 Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan,” and Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare.” Jobson suggested Charles wanted to reconnect with his son’s family but felt protective measures were warranted given that history.

Harry’s trip to the U.K. was marked by controversy before the reunion even took place. He was turned away from staying at Buckingham Palace following the collapse of his legal case against Associated Newspapers. Harry publicly stated that his invitation to lodge at the palace had been withdrawn; palace sources countered that he had initially declined the offer before changing his mind too late for accommodations to be arranged.
