Trump’s Late Mom’s Interview Leaves Internet Speechless

A three-decade-old interview showcasing President Donald Trump’s late mother has captivated social media, with audiences expressing amazement at the remarkable similarities between Mary Anne MacLeod Trump and her well-known son.

The footage from a 1994 installment of the Irish television program “It’s Bibi,” presented by Olive “Bibi” Baskin, reemerged Wednesday, March 26, 2026, after an X user posted the recording. The footage rapidly gained traction, accumulating hundreds of thousands of views and thousands of reactions from astonished observers who continuously drew parallels between mother and son.

During the interview, recorded at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City for a St. Patrick’s Day segment of the program, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump spoke about her Scottish heritage and migration to America. Wearing a white blouse with a dramatic bow and a red and black plaid jacket, she described her origins with a pronounced Scottish accent that social media observers instantly identified in her son’s speech patterns.

Mary Anne MacLeod Trump was in fact born in the small village of Tong on the Isle of Lewis, approximately three miles from Stornoway, although in the interview she characterized it simply as “a little town called Stornoway, in the Island of Lewis way up in the Hebrides. A beautiful little island.”

The reaction on social media was swift and intense. Observers inundated the comments with remarks about her mannerisms, her distinctive hairstyle — which displayed a remarkable likeness to her son’s iconic look — and her undeniable presence before the camera. Several comments adopted a lighthearted approach, with observers making jokes about the physical parallels between mother and son.

Mary Anne MacLeod traveled from the Isle of Lewis to New York City in 1930, disembarking with merely $50 in her possession and securing employment as a domestic servant. During the mid-1930s, while residing with her sister in Queens, she encountered Fred Trump at a social gathering. The driven young developer, already establishing his reputation in New York real estate, charmed her. The pair wed on January 11, 1936, at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and raised five children together, including Donald Trump and his late brother Fred Trump Jr.

In the 1994 interview, Mary Anne revealed that her son Donald was in Los Angeles during the taping. “He got a call from Steven Spielberg asking if he could come and make a cameo in some movie that Spielberg is doing. Of course Donald didn’t want to say no,” she said.

President Trump has expressed warm sentiments about his mother on numerous occasions. At a White House gathering honoring military mothers before Mother’s Day in May 2025, he reminisced about their bond, describing her as “such an angel” who “could be very tough.”

During a session with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland in July 2025, Trump talked about his mother’s profound connection to Scotland and her appreciation for Queen Elizabeth II. “Whenever the Queen was on television, she wanted to watch,” he said. “And religiously, she’d come back to Scotland once a year, with my sister, Maryanne… they loved this part of the world.”

Mary Anne MacLeod Trump obtained naturalized U.S. citizenship on March 10, 1942, and established herself as a prominent figure on the New York social scene, contributing to various philanthropic organizations, including Jamaica Hospital and charities supporting disabled children and adults. She died on August 7, 2000, at age 88 at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, just over a year after her husband Fred Trump passed away at age 93.

The rediscovered footage has provided a new generation of observers a window into the life of the woman who influenced one of America’s most identifiable political figures. For many viewing the clip, the apple clearly didn’t fall far from the tree — not just in terms of the distinctive hairstyle, but in presence, speech patterns, and unmistakable showmanship.
