President Donald Trump stumbled through an awkward exchange about his Valentine’s Day plans with First Lady Melania Trump aboard Air Force One, sparking renewed speculation about the couple’s relationship as viral clips continue to capture uncomfortable body language between them.
The president deflected questions from reporters about whether he celebrated Valentine’s Day with his wife or purchased flowers for the occasion, responding with nervous laughter and an abrupt dismissal.
“Better not tell you that. Goodbye, everybody. That’s the toughest question,” Trump said while flying back to Washington, D.C. from Mar-a-Lago, where he spent Presidents Day weekend.
Rather than discuss his personal relationship with the First Lady, Trump pivoted to promoting her documentary “Melania” and praising her official duties. He insisted the film was “a tremendous hit” despite underwhelming box office performance telling a different story.
The documentary, which follows the first lady during the 20 days leading up to Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, has grossed approximately $16.7 million at the box office. Amazon MGM Studios paid $40 million to acquire and produce the film and spent an additional $35 million on marketing — a combined $75 million investment that the theatrical release is unlikely to recoup, according to Variety.
The film suffered a steep 67-percent drop in its second weekend and continued declining in subsequent weeks, according to industry data. Amazon MGM Studios distribution chief Kevin Wilson has insisted the film will recover losses through Amazon Prime Video streaming, where executives believe most of the audience will ultimately watch it.
The Valentine’s Day exchange marked just the latest in a series of uncomfortable moments between the president and First Lady that have captivated social media. The couple walked on a black carpet at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for the “Melania” documentary premiere on January 29, standing about a foot apart from one another.
Observers noted Trump appeared rather disinterested standing next to his wife at the premiere, with clips highlighting the distance between them and their stilted body language throughout the event.
Perhaps the most discussed moment occurred at Trump’s military parade on June 14, 2025, marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army — a date that also happened to fall on the president’s 79th birthday. The event, which cost an estimated $25 to $45 million, drew criticism for sparse turnout despite the White House claiming 250,000 people attended. Photos showed empty bleachers and large gaps in the crowd.
During the parade, Trump attempted to place his pinky against Melania’s hand in what appeared to be a subtle gesture of affection. The First Lady pulled away slightly from the touch, creating an instantly viral moment that landed on late-night television.
“Rejected!” exclaimed Stephen Colbert on the “Late Show,” showing footage of the awkward pinky moment to his audience and quipping that it was “risky of her” given Trump’s powers as commander in chief, according to HuffPost.
Social media erupted with commentary about the couple’s apparent distance. Users analyzed every frame of the viral clips, with many noting the body language seemed inconsistent with typical married couple behavior.
The Trumps have been married for 21 years, having wed on January 22, 2005, in Palm Beach, Florida. Melania has maintained a notably lower profile than previous First Ladies throughout both of her husband’s terms. The documentary was intended to showcase her work and presence in the administration, but critics have widely described its theatrical release as a vanity project — or worse, a potential avenue for corruption given Amazon’s extensive business interests with the federal government.
Trump defended his wife’s role during the Valentine’s Day exchange, praising what he described as her consequential diplomatic work with children affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and predicting she would “go down as one of the truly great first ladies.”
The awkward moment aboard Air Force One occurred as reporters shifted the conversation to Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s exclusion from an upcoming National Governors Association event at the White House. Trump announced that Moore — the nation’s only Black governor and the incoming NGA chair — would not be invited to the traditionally bipartisan dinner, along with Democratic Governor Jared Polis of Colorado. Moore called the snub “blatant disrespect” and noted that being singled out as the only Black governor “carries an added weight.”
The documentary will eventually appear on Amazon Prime Video, where studio executives hope streaming numbers will help justify the massive investment. The film’s theatrical run continues despite the sharp decline in attendance, though industry analysts remain skeptical about its overall financial performance.
As speculation about the first couple’s relationship dynamics continues to dominate social media and late-night television, the White House has not addressed questions about their marriage or the increasingly viral moments captured on camera.
