Beloved TV Actor Found Dead at 54

Nicholas Brendon, the cherished actor known for portraying Xander Harris on the cult TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died at 54. His family said he passed peacefully in his sleep from natural causes on March 20, 2026.

Brendon played the devoted, self-effacing Xander Harris across all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” from 1997 to 2003, acting as Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character’s closest friend. His performance as the everyman hero earned him three Saturn Award nominations—two for Best Genre TV Actor (1998, 1999) and one for Best Supporting Actor (2000).

Born in Los Angeles, he brought warmth and comic relief to a character who resonated as the only core group member without supernatural abilities. Brendon’s twin brother, Kelly Donovan, served as his body double on the series, notably in the fifth-season episode “The Replacement,” when Xander is split into two versions.

Gellar honored her former co-star on Instagram by quoting a Season 7 scene between Xander and Dawn — a tribute that also honored the late Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn and died in February 2025. “I saw you Nicky,” she wrote. “I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”

Emma Caulfield, who played Anya, Xander’s love interest, shared a video tribute: “My heart is heavy. I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”

Alyson Hannigan, who played Xander’s best friend Willow Rosenberg, also paid tribute on Instagram. “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP,” she wrote.

The announcement comes days after Hulu canceled a proposed “Buffy” reboot. On March 14, 2026, Gellar revealed on Instagram that the streamer would not proceed with “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” which would have returned her to the role alongside a new young slayer played by actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao attached to helm the project.

In 2023, Brendon reflected on the show’s lasting impact while marking the 20th anniversary of its finale, saying he still encountered fans who felt as if the series had only recently stopped filming.

Outside of “Buffy,” Brendon appeared in many TV series, including a recurring role as FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch on “Criminal Minds” from 2007 to 2014, as well as roles on “Private Practice” and “Kitchen Confidential.” His film work included “Psycho Beach Party,” “Big Gay Love,” “Redwood,” and “Coherence.”

He faced serious health problems over the years. In 2021, he became paralyzed due to a spinal issue and underwent multiple surgeries for cauda equina syndrome. In 2022, he was hospitalized after a cardiac episode involving tachycardia and arrhythmia, and in 2023 he said he had suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

Brendon lived with a stutter and became an advocate as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He openly discussed battles with substance addiction, alcoholism, and mental health, appearing on “Dr. Phil” to share his experiences.

His legal record included several arrests. In 2014 he was detained after a drunken incident at an Idaho hotel. In 2021 he faced felony prescription fraud charges in Indiana, and a plea agreement was reached in 2022.

Despite these difficulties, his family highlighted his optimism. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was,” they said.

The family said Brendon had recently taken up painting and visual art, eagerly sharing his creations with family, friends, and fans.

Brendon is the second member of the “Buffy” cast to die in recent years, following Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers and died in February 2025 at 39 from complications related to diabetes.
