Celebrity TV Host Dead at 54, Weeks After Health Update

Mel Schilling, the cherished relationship expert who assisted numerous pairs in discovering romance on the Australian and UK editions of “Married at First Sight (MAFS),” has passed away at age 53, merely 12 days following her announcement that her cancer had reached a terminal stage.

Her spouse, Gareth Brisbane, shared the heartbreaking update on March 24, stating: “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.”

The dynamic TV star’s passing concludes a grueling two-year fight with colon cancer that she shared candidly with her audience. Schilling initially found a lemon-sized tumor in December 2023 following intense abdominal pain while taping the Australian edition of the reality program. She gave the tumor the nickname “Terry” and, following surgical removal, physicians originally declared her cancer-free.

However, the reprieve was fleeting. During a standard examination in late February 2024, healthcare professionals found small nodules in her lungs. The cancer had spread, and Schilling’s life was upended once more.

In spite of the dire outlook, she declined to abandon the career she adored. Throughout the following two years, Schilling endured 16 cycles of chemotherapy while simultaneously taping both the UK and Australian editions of “Married at First Sight.” Her spouse subsequently disclosed that even during times when she could scarcely raise her head from her pillow, she never skipped a single filming session.

In January 2025, physicians declared her cancer was in remission. Her optimism increased when she discovered she had been accepted into a groundbreaking gene-targeted clinical trial set to commence in March 2026. Temporarily, it seemed she could defeat the illness.

Then arrived Christmas 2025, when Schilling began experiencing severe headaches and numbness along her right side. Following multiple examinations, physicians delivered crushing news: the cancer had spread to the left hemisphere of her brain. Despite receiving multiple rounds of radiotherapy, her medical team eventually informed her there were no remaining treatment options.

On March 12, 2026, Schilling disclosed on Instagram that she had received a terminal diagnosis. She said her light was beginning to fade quickly, but that she remained present, continuing to fight and surrounded by immense love. She added that everyday tasks had become very difficult, and she is depending on her loving family for care.

The swift advancement of the illness stopped her from entering the clinical trial that had provided such promise.

Channel 4, the UK network that broadcast the program, honored Schilling, characterizing her as someone who “radiated joy, warmth and optimism” and “energised every room she walked into.” The broadcaster respected Schilling’s dying wish by continuing to broadcast “Married at First Sight” episodes showcasing her contributions, with an on-screen message stating: “It was Mel and her family’s wish that we carry on showing MAFS and celebrate her mission to help others find love and happiness.”

Australia’s Channel Nine likewise honored her, stating Schilling “had a gift for connecting with people” and that she led viewers “through the complexities of the human heart with wisdom, honesty, and kindness,” calling her “a big part of our family.”

Her close friend and co-expert on “Married at First Sight” Australia John Aiken assumed her position on the UK program with her approval. In an emotional remembrance, Aiken called himself “heartbroken, devastated and finding it hard to breathe,” stating that it “was a privilege and an honor to sit beside her on the MAFS couch and watch her shine.”

Remembrances flooded in from coworkers and participants from both editions of the program. “This Morning” hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley shared news of her passing during their live broadcast, honoring the “bright and colourful” host. Co-expert on MAFS UK Charlene Douglas expressed that she was “devastated and heartbroken,” noting that she “had the pleasure of spending time with Mel in her last days.”

The 53-year-old Australian TV personality had been a mainstay on both editions of the widely-watched reality program since her debut in 2016, providing her knowledge as a relationship psychologist to assist complete strangers in managing marriages following their first meeting at the ceremony. She participated in the Australian program for 12 seasons and additionally became part of the UK edition beginning in 2021. Her vibrant character and authentic dedication to the couples’ well-being made her a beloved figure who surpassed the conventional reality TV specialist position.

During her battle with illness, Schilling stayed dedicated to promoting awareness regarding the significance of early diagnosis. In her last public statement, she encouraged her supporters: “If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”

Schilling is survived by her husband, Gareth, whom she wed in Bali in 2018 after connecting on a dating website in 2010, and their 10-year-old daughter, Maddie. In his declaration of her death, Gareth shared a touching concluding moment: when he thought cancer had robbed her of speech, she signaled him to come near. She whispered a message for him and Maddie that would sustain him for the rest of his life. He concluded his remembrance with advice to her supporters: “Live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.”
