Popular Chef Dead After Horrific Motorcycle Crash

A Sydney-based chef was killed in a motorcycle crash in Bali in early February, leading to an outpouring of sorrow from friends and coworkers who honored his enthusiasm and lively spirit.

Davide Vulpis had been exploring the Indonesian island with friends when the incident occurred. Originally from Terlizzi, Italy, he had lived in Sydney, Australia for over a year and worked at Cibaria Italian restaurant located inside the Manly Pacific Hotel on the Northern Beaches.

His brother, Christian Vulpis, launched a GoFundMe to cover cremation expenses in Bali and return Davide’s ashes to Italy. The appeal described the loss as unexpected and devastating. Christian stressed how meaningful it was for the family to bring Davide home. The fundraiser reached its $12,000 target in mere hours, surpassing $11,000 before being paused. The funds will pay for cremation, legal, and administrative costs.

Before moving to Sydney, Vulpis worked in Ibiza as the head chef at Aparthotel Playasol Mogambo and also offered private catering services on the island. His last Instagram post featured him preparing steak at the Manly restaurant with the caption “Chef life.”

Other recent posts highlighted his visits to popular sights around Circular Quay and a getaway to Thailand. These images captured moments from his Southeast Asian travels shortly before his passing.

Friends shared tributes online after hearing the news. One woman, who said she had taught him, expressed the pain of suddenly losing a student and even recalled the ten cups of coffee he drank during class.

Another friend called him a wonderful uncle and noted that he had been the best man at a wedding, adding that he made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated they were not offering consular help because Vulpis was not an Australian citizen. A spokesperson confirmed the department had no involvement.

Bali continues to be a major tourist destination for Australians and international travelers, admired for its beaches, cultural sites, and affordable vacations. Millions visit annually, with many opting to rent scooters or motorcycles. Accidents involving tourists on two-wheeled vehicles are frequent due to different road conditions and unfamiliar traffic behavior.

Indonesian officials are working to enhance road safety in tourism-heavy areas, though enforcement varies. Many incidents involve riders without proper licensing or experience operating motorcycles in tropical environments. While helmets are required by law, adherence is uneven, and some districts have less-developed roads than Western countries.

The collision happened only weeks after another Australian died in a nearby scooter accident. Bryce Alexander Black, 33, from the New South Wales Central Coast, was riding a scooter in North Kuta when he struck a car head-on on December 28. His partner, Samantha Baillie, also 33, was critically hurt.

Sydney’s northern beaches culinary scene has lost a committed chef who brought Mediterranean skill and knowledge to local kitchens. Cibaria Italian restaurant offers traditional Italian flavors in a beachfront environment, prioritizing genuine techniques and fresh ingredients—values Vulpis carried from his European background.

Italian cuisine continues to strongly influence Sydney, with many Italian chefs enriching the city’s diverse dining culture. Italian professionals contribute widely to Australia’s hospitality sector, sharing the traditions of their home regions. The northern beaches area, where Vulpis worked, is recognized for providing high-quality dining experiences for residents and tourists.

Vulpis’ journey from Terlizzi to Ibiza and then to Sydney demonstrates the international nature of the culinary field, where chefs often travel abroad to expand their abilities and share their talent. His global experience exposed him to various cooking styles and restaurant settings that he brought into his work in Sydney.

The swift support for the fundraiser, which reached its goal within hours, reflects the powerful impact Vulpis had on those around him. Friends, coworkers, and former students donated to help his family return him to Italy for his final resting place.
