12 Schoolchildren Killed in Bus Crash

A minibus crash with a truck in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, resulted in the death of 12 children, as confirmed by local authorities. The accident occurred in the Gauteng province, which is situated south of Johannesburg. The private vehicle was transporting students to elementary and secondary schools when the fatal collision happened around 7 a.m. on January 19, 2026.

Initial reports suggested the death of 11 children at the accident site. However, after police visited local hospitals and mortuaries to confirm casualties, it was established that 12 students had died on the spot. Later in the day, one student’s body was found trapped under the vehicle.

According to witnesses, the minibus was trying to overtake other vehicles when it hit the truck. The Toyota Quantum minibus was carrying 17 students in total, despite its approved capacity being only 14 passengers. Provincial police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that the vehicle was over capacity.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi stated that the school vehicle was attempting to overtake several cars when it encountered the truck. Despite the truck driver’s efforts to swerve and avoid the collision, the impact was unavoidable.

Gauteng Emergency Services’ emergency responders transported five injured individuals to Sebokeng Hospital, while two others were taken to Kopanong Hospital for further medical treatment. The minibus driver, who was also injured in the crash, was among those taken to the hospital.

The minibus driver, a 22-year-old man, survived the crash and was injured. After being released from the hospital on Monday night, he was arrested by Gauteng police and charged with 12 counts of culpable homicide, as well as reckless and negligent driving.

According to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, the driver’s Public Driver’s Permit had expired in November 2025, which means he was not legally authorized to transport students at the time of the accident.

Describing the incident as “an extremely tragic day for us as the department and the province,” Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane urged for increased vigilance regarding student transport.

The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, stated that many accidents involving school transport are caused by driver error. She called on the Department of Transport to ensure vehicles responsible for transporting schoolchildren are roadworthy.

Describing the accident as “unbearable,” Premier Lesufi called for stricter regulations for the expanding private student transport sector. This call reflects growing concerns about the safety standards in South Africa’s informal school transportation network.

South Africa has consistently struggled with road safety issues, particularly those pertaining to student transport. The nation’s road network witnesses thousands of fatalities each year, with inadequate vehicle maintenance, driver behavior, and regulatory enforcement contributing to the crisis. Private school transport operators often fill gaps left by insufficient public transportation, but this informal system has historically operated with varying degrees of oversight.

The Toyota Quantum minibus, a common vehicle used for informal public transport across South Africa and often associated with student transport in many communities, serves millions of commuters daily. However, these vehicles, colloquially known as “taxis,” have been involved in numerous major accidents over the years.

Vehicle overloading continues to be a widespread issue in South Africa’s transport sector. Although regulations specify maximum passenger capacities, enforcement difficulties and economic pressures often cause operators to exceed these limits.

In South Africa, culpable homicide investigations examine whether negligence or reckless behavior contributed to deaths. These investigations can lead to criminal charges if authorities determine that a driver’s actions constituted gross negligence or disregard for safety.

This incident underscores the ongoing debates about the regulation of private student transport in South Africa. While these services provide essential mobility for students whose families cannot afford private vehicles or who live far from schools, the sector operates with varying levels of professionalism and compliance with safety standards.

The call for stricter regulation will likely intensify discussions about licensing requirements, vehicle inspections, driver training, and enforcement mechanisms. However, implementing more rigorous standards must be balanced against ensuring transportation remains accessible and affordable for families who depend on these services.

Road safety experts consistently emphasize that most traffic accidents are preventable through a combination of proper vehicle maintenance, driver education, enforcement of traffic laws, and infrastructure improvements. The challenge lies in translating these principles into consistent practice across all sectors of the transportation network.

As investigations continue, authorities will examine all factors that contributed to the crash, including vehicle condition, driver qualifications, road conditions, and whether any traffic laws were violated. The findings will be crucial in determining whether criminal charges are warranted and what systemic changes might prevent similar tragedies.
