10 Dead, 32 Injured in Christmas Eve Bus Accident

A bus crash in eastern Mexico killed 10 people and injured 32 others on Christmas Eve, authorities confirmed. The accident happened in Zontecomatlan, Veracruz state, as the bus traveled from Mexico City to the village of Chicontepec.

The crash occurred around 5 p.m. local time on December 24, 2025, when the bus plunged more than 600 feet down an embankment on a winding road. The vehicle landed upside down in a ravine, with images from the scene showing the overturned bus resting in rugged terrain as emergency workers surrounded the wreckage.

“At this stage, we have confirmed nine adults and one child dead,” the Zontecomatlan mayor’s office said in a statement released the day after the accident. The municipality also released a list of 32 people injured and the hospitals to which they were admitted, helping families locate their loved ones during the Christmas holiday.

The bus was carrying many passengers, believed to be returning home to celebrate Christmas with their families. Emergency services initially reported eight deaths and 19 injuries when they first arrived at the scene. As rescue operations continued throughout the evening of December 24, the death toll rose to 10, with the number of injured climbing to 32. The injured passengers were transported to multiple medical facilities across the region for treatment.

State governors announced that the government was coordinating the response to the bus accident, which occurred in a ravine in Zontecomatlan. Authorities noted they were continuing rescue and care operations at the site alongside emergency response teams. The injured were transferred to hospitals in Chicontepec and Huayacocotla, where medical staff treated passengers for various injuries sustained in the fall.

The bus was operated by the Conexión line and had departed from Mexico City earlier that day. The route from the capital to Chicontepec covers a significant distance through mountainous terrain, requiring several hours of travel on winding roads through the Veracruz Huasteca region, known for its tropical landscapes, rivers, and mountains.

The driver was identified as Carlos Daniel Baez, though authorities have not confirmed whether he was among those killed or injured in the crash. It remains unclear why the vehicle veered off the road. The General Prosecutor’s Office of Justice of the State of Veracruz launched an investigation into the incident and is working with detectives to determine the cause of the accident.

Local emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics, and rescue personnel, worked for hours at the crash site to extract passengers from the overturned bus and provide medical care. The steep terrain and remote location complicated rescue efforts, requiring specialized equipment and careful coordination among multiple agencies responding to the Christmas Eve emergency. First responders had to navigate the challenging conditions while working to save lives and transport the injured to hospitals.

Fatal road accidents involving buses or trucks are common in Mexico, often caused by speeding or mechanical failure. Mexico’s extensive network of highways and mountain roads poses ongoing safety challenges for commercial passenger vehicles, particularly those serving routes connecting major cities to smaller towns and villages. The steep grades and sharp curves on many routes require careful navigation, especially when buses are carrying full passenger loads.

In late November, 10 people were killed and 20 others injured in a similar accident in the western state of Michoacan. That crash highlighted the persistent challenges Mexico faces in ensuring road safety, particularly for buses transporting passengers during holiday travel periods when highways experience increased traffic and many vehicles are making long-distance journeys.

The investigation into the Christmas Eve crash will likely examine multiple factors, including the condition of the bus, the driver’s hours of service, weather conditions at the time of the accident, and the state of the roadway where the vehicle left the road. Investigators will also review whether the bus company maintained proper safety standards and conducted required vehicle inspections. The findings could provide insight into whether mechanical failure, driver error, road conditions, or other factors contributed to the accident.

The victims’ families now face the difficult task of identifying their loved ones and making funeral arrangements during what should have been a time of celebration. For the survivors, many face long recoveries from their injuries sustained in the fall down the embankment, along with the psychological trauma of having experienced such a severe accident while traveling home for the holidays.
