The four-day athletic competition will feature high school athletes from across the nation, with one boy and one girl selected from each state to compete. The selection format immediately triggered comparisons to author Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games,” a 2008 book in which one boy and one girl from each district participate in a deadly competition.
Social media erupted with commentary mocking the announcement. California Gov. Gavin Newsom joined those ridiculing the proposal, while numerous online commenters questioned whether the event resembled the fictional dystopia.
“I’m sorry, but is he announcing the Hunger Games?” one social media user wrote, capturing the sentiment shared by many critics.
Political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen quipped about the announcement, while the Democrats’ account quoted directly from Collins’ novel. “We asked for affordable health care and Republicans are giving us the Hunger Games” Cohen remarked. Critics also questioned whether the announcement had been written by artificial intelligence, adding another layer to the online mockery.
The Patriot Games represent just one element of Trump’s vision for what he called “the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen.” The president announced multiple events scheduled throughout 2026 to mark 250 years of American freedom.
Trump revealed plans to illuminate the Washington Monument as part of the celebrations. The administration also intends to construct a triumphal arch, with the president emphasizing the importance of such a monument for the nation’s capital.
The Great American State Fair will take place on the National Mall from June 25 to July 10, 2026. Trump announced plans for a National Garden of American Heroes, which will feature prominent historical figures, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Muhammad Ali, and Albert Einstein.
A major prayer event is planned for spring 2026, while Flag Day will see a UFC event hosted at the White House on June 14. UFC CEO Dana White, Trump’s ally, will host the UFC competition.
During his announcement, Trump specifically stated there would be “no men in women’s sports” at the Patriot Games, adding this promise to his description of the athletic competition.
The administration created a new public-private partnership, Freedom 250, to help execute the 2026 celebratory plans. The Freedom 250 partnership will coordinate with states, companies, and organizations across the country to implement the anniversary plans. The public-private collaboration aims to involve multiple stakeholders in the celebrations while maintaining central coordination by the administration.
Trump’s 250th anniversary planning is being coordinated alongside the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, a congressionally mandated bipartisan body created in 2016. The commission, led by former U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios, works independently but in coordination with the White House Task Force 250 to plan celebrations nationwide. The commission’s goal is to engage all 350 million Americans through programs including oral history projects, volunteer initiatives, and state-level commemorations.
