Trump Publicly Mocks Melania at Rally

The first lady asked her husband to retire two of his favorite stage bits, and he told thousands of people about it before doing them anyway.

President Donald Trump, 80, told a rally crowd in Bullhead City, Ariz., on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, that First Lady Melania Trump had asked him to drop his onstage impression of a transgender weightlifter — and then he performed it, grunts included.

“My wife is going crazy with me,” he told supporters, quoting her as saying, “You’re president of the United States, you shouldn’t be doing this.” Seconds later he hoisted an imaginary barbell over his head and grunted for the crowd.

A rally transcript published by Roll Call’s Factba.se documents the Bullhead City remarks. The transcript records public remarks only, and there is no independent confirmation of the private conversations he attributed to his wife.

The Wave He Was Asked to Use

Trump told the crowd his wife had a second complaint: his walk-off dance to the Village People’s “YMCA.” He quoted her saying, “You should not dance off the stage, my darling. I love you very much, but please, don’t do that.” Her request, as he described it, was that he skip the dancing and leave with a gentle wave instead.

He mimicked it on the spot, fluttering a hand and offering a breezy “Goodbye, everyone.” At the end of the Arizona rally, he danced off the stage.

From the weightlifter material in Bullhead City, Trump moved into a story about a swimmer supposedly suffering from windburn. Footage of the stretch circulated on X and drew criticism, with one viewer writing: “What the hell is he talking about? How does talking about that help anyone?”

Trump has called “YMCA” the “gay national anthem” and claims the song helped him win the highest gay vote of any Republican in history. Village People frontman Victor Willis, who co-wrote the track, died in June 2026. Willis threatened in 2024 to sue anyone who described the song as a gay anthem, and the group still performed at Trump’s inauguration festivities in January 2025.

“So Unelegant, Darling” in Alaska

The routine got an earlier airing on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Wasilla, Alaska, where Trump campaigned for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. He told that crowd his wife hates when he talks about this and calls it “so unelegant, darling.” His reply to her, by his account, was to point out that he had just won the election in a landslide and to ask to be left alone.

He ran the barbell bit again in Wasilla, with a moment of mock hesitation. “Oh, my wife hates this … she said it’s so damn unpresidential,” Trump said before asking the crowd whether he should finish. The audience cheered, he thanked them, and he finished.

Trump wrapped that stretch by calling transgender athletes in women’s sports “so demeaning” to women. He called Sullivan “one of the best senators that you have” and joked that it had been “a lot of flying.” Wasilla sits about 40 miles north of Anchorage, is the hometown of former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, and serves as headquarters of the Iditarod sled dog race.

Advice for a Police Officer

Trump also told the Wasilla crowd about a police officer whose retirement investments had improved. The officer said his wife now considered him financially capable, and when asked whether he intended to stay married, the officer said he was considering it. Trump’s reply: “Stay with your wife. It’s much less expensive.”

The line drew laughter at the rally and criticism online, where one commenter described his apparent outlook as treating marriage like “an emotionless financial transaction.”

A Routine Running Since May 2025

The weightlifter impression has been in the act since at least May 2025, and Trump has been saying for months that his wife dislikes it. At a Texas rally he offered another domestic detail, claiming his wife calls him “Sir” at home. Melania Trump, whose signature issue is anti-bullying, has not appeared at any of her husband’s midterm rallies, which come as Republicans work to protect their grip on Congress before Election Day on Nov. 3.

The first lady addressed her role as adviser in a Sept. 23 appearance on “Fox & Friends,” where she said she praised the delivery of her husband’s U.N. General Assembly speech. “Sometimes he doesn’t want to hear it, what I tell him, but that’s okay,” she said.

Author Michael Wolff wrote in a July post on his Substack publication HOWL that the marriage was “probably at its lowest point since the Stormy Daniels trial,” and also claimed the couple barely spoke. A New York jury convicted Trump in May 2024 of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records over reimbursements for a $130,000 payment Michael Cohen made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

The White House rejects that account. White House spokesman Steven Cheung accused Wolff of fabricating stories and challenged his credibility. Wolff had previously alleged in “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” that the Trumps kept separate bedrooms.
