Following Donald Trump’s victory in the November 5, 2024 election, several high-profile Hollywood figures have voiced plans to leave the United States. They cite an amalgamation of political, societal, and personal issues they believe have worsened since the election.
These individuals express dissatisfaction with the country’s trajectory, raising concerns about policies that they perceive to endanger reproductive rights, protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, environmental regulations, and gun control efforts.
Singer Cher has been clear about her stance, declaring, “I almost got an ulcer the last time,” alluding to health complications she attributes to prior political tension. “If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country].”
Actress Sharon Stone mentioned she was “considering buying a house in Italy,” marking the first occasion she had observed a candidate campaign on what she characterized as “a platform of hate and oppression.”
Reportedly, America Ferrera is making plans to depart the U.S. in the wake of Trump’s victory. At the age of 40, she contemplates beginning anew in the UK with her husband, Ryan Piers Williams, and their two children, six-year-old Sebastian and four-year-old Lucia. A source suggests that Ferrera, recognized for her role in “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” is seeking a better environment for her children.
Barbara Streisand is among the celebrities disclosing relocation plans, with England being her preferred destination. Other industry figures expressing similar intentions include John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Amy Schumer, Bruce Springsteen, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Artists Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, along with actress Christina Applegate, have also added their voices to the reactions to the political climate.
Parallel to the present wave of celebrities declaring departure plans post Trump’s 2024 victory, a similar pattern was seen in 2016, with several stars expressing comparable intentions that were not followed through. Notable personalities from that period include Miley Cyrus, who initially contemplated moving but later advocated for unity post-election; Amy Schumer, who proposed Spain as her new residence; and Samuel L. Jackson, who identified South Africa as his choice if Trump were to win.
Others, such as musician Tommy Lee, pledged to go back to his birthplace, Greece, while Bruce Springsteen pointed to Australia as a potential sanctuary. Regardless of these declarations, none of the aforementioned stars ultimately exited the U.S., leading some experts to categorize these announcements as “all talk, no action.”
