Renauld White, a trailblazing Black model and actor who left an indelible mark on the fashion and entertainment industries, passed away on June 26, 2024, at the age of 80. White died while under hospice care at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York City.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, White rose to prominence in the 1970s as a model, breaking barriers for Black representation in the fashion world. In November 1979, he made history by becoming the second Black model to grace the cover of GQ magazine, following Swiss model Urs Althaus. This groundbreaking achievement helped pave the way for greater diversity in the modeling industry.
Throughout his illustrious career, White worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Bill Blass. He was also one of the first Black models to walk the runways for designers like Donna Karan. White’s influence extended beyond the catwalk, as he appeared on the cover of Playboy in 1982, further cementing his status as a pioneering figure in the industry.
White’s impact on the fashion world was not limited to his modeling work. He was a vocal advocate for increased diversity in the industry, often confronting modeling agencies about the lack of opportunities for Black models. His efforts helped to bring about positive change and open doors for future generations of models of color.
In 1986, White transitioned into acting, making his debut on the popular soap opera “Guiding Light.” He portrayed the character of William Reynolds for several years, appearing in multiple episodes between 1986 and 1992. This role marked the beginning of a successful acting career that spanned several decades.
White’s acting credits included appearances in various television shows and movies. He had roles in the TV movie “Gun Hill” in 2014 and the horror film “Central Park” in 2017, which would become his final on-screen appearance. Throughout his career, White continued to push for greater representation of Black actors in the entertainment industry.
Even in his later years, White remained active in the fashion world. In 2023, at the age of 79, he came out of retirement to participate in a campaign for Dolce & Gabbana, showcasing his enduring influence and appeal in the industry.
White’s passing was announced by his longtime friend, fashion designer Jeffrey Banks, who remembered him as “the perfect gentleman and a great ambassador” for his brand. Banks’ sentiment echoes the widespread admiration and respect White garnered throughout his career.
Renauld White’s funeral will be held on July 12, 2024 in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.
