Authorities have revealed shocking new details about the deaths of an elderly couple and their dog in San Juan Capistrano, California.
The victims, Antoinette Gerdvil, 79, and Ronald Walter Gerdvil, 77, were found decapitated and mutilated in their mobile home, along with their family dog, on July 9, 2024. The suspect in the case is their son, 41-year-old Joseph Brandon Gerdvil.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) received a domestic violence call at 7:36 a.m. on Tuesday. When deputies arrived at the San Juan Mobile Estates, they discovered the horrific scene. “A scene which included the mutilated bodies of Ronald and Antoinette Gerdvil, as well as a decapitated dog belonging to the married couple,” stated an OCSD representative.
Shortly after the discovery, deputies were informed of a bloody man chasing a maintenance worker in the community. The suspect, later identified as Gerdvil, stole the maintenance worker’s golf cart. Deputies caught up with him near a bike trail at 7:52 a.m., and a confrontation led to a deputy-involved shooting. Gerdvil was struck multiple times and taken to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Neighbors described the Gerdvils as a quiet, friendly couple. “The lady that lived there walked her dog all of the time in the neighborhood,” said Tammy Pavese, a mobile home park resident. “Everybody knew who he(suspect) was.”
Another neighbor, David Desmond, remembered seeing Joseph Gerdvil arguing with his father the day before the murders. “Younger guy was in his face, with his finger pointing at him, in his face,” Desmond said. “I didn’t hear what they were saying, but he looked outraged and the other guy was old.”
The motive behind the killings remains under investigation. “He had a drug issue. That’s why he lived there, and they kept him there,” said Bob Demario, another neighbor.
Residents of the San Juan Mobile Estates expressed their horror and sadness over the brutal killings. “”It’s terrifying,” said Tammy Pavese. “There are many families with young children living here.” The once quiet neighborhood is now grappling with the reality of the violent crime that took place within their midst.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department continues investigating the case, seeking to understand the circumstances and motive behind the act. “Investigators urged anyone with information on the killings to call the department,” said an OCSD spokesperson. The department also encourages anonymous tips to be submitted to the Orange County Crime Stoppers.
Joseph Gerdvil remains under medical supervision and will be transported to the Orange County Sheriff’s Jail once medically cleared. According to court records, Joseph Gerdvil has been charged with two counts of special-circumstances murder, and additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.
