Father’s Shooting Spree Leaves 4 Family Members Dead

On Wednesday night, July 10, 2024, four family members were shot and killed at their home in Alameda, California. The Alameda Police Department responded to a 911 call from a neighbor on Kitty Hawk Road who reported the shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found multiple victims, including children. Shane Killian, 54, was taken into custody without resistance. The victims include Killian’s wife, their six-year-old son, and his wife’s parents. A second son, just one-year-old, was also shot and remained in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police said an elderly man (the father-in-law) made one last attempt at getting help for his family after being shot by his son-in-law. “The eldest victim came to my house and said that he was shot and he was dying,” said Chris, a neighbor who did not want to disclose their last name. The neighbor added that the victim was bleeding when he arrived at his doorstep around 9 p.m.

Police Chief Nishant Joshi expressed the department’s sorrow and determination to support the affected families. “This is a tragic and sad incident for the police department and the community,” he said. Neighbors described the family as friendly and noted that the children often played together in the neighborhood.

The community is in shock, with many struggling to comprehend the senseless violence. “It’s devastating to see something like this happen to a family that had just started to settle in and become part of our neighborhood,” said one resident.

A vigil for the family was held on Thursday night, July 11, 2024, at Alameda Beach. Neighbors and staff from the elementary school where the six-year-old victim attended gathered to mourn the loss and support each other.

Neighbors gathered on Kitty Hawk Road and created a makeshift memorial for the victims. One neighbor who coaches Little League in the area and goes by the name Coach Ray said he is in disbelief at what happened. “The kid is never going to get another game ball, and he needed that,” the coach said in tears.

The Alameda Police Department has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the investigation is continuing. Multiple firearms were recovered from the home, but the motive for the shooting remains unclear.

This incident marks at least the 21st mass killing in the U.S. this year, highlighting a disturbing trend of family-related violence. The community’s response has been one of unity and support as they struggle with the aftermath of this tragedy.
